Windows 10: Why wasn't the draft saved?

My Internet was out yesterday. Hoping that it wouldn't take but an hour or two to fix, I typed an email with some details I could remember but wanted to save in case I forgot. I had tried Word but was told I'd have to sign in obviously that wouldn't work. I realized my emails were in Mail and clicked on "reply" for two of them. Realizing nothing was getting fixed, I decided I might get more done if I went to a library, I left and came back home after several hours and the Internet was back. I saved another email successfully but don't know what I did differently. Maybe it was saved because

Save drafts.

In past without my telling it to do so, Hotmail simply saved drafts of my outgoing emails, even the emails I sent right after writing them. That gave me a rather full drafts folder, so I deleted a lot of them, but it chose to wipe out every draft and
will no longer save them routinely. Now I can save a draft only by choosing drafts then save and have no automatic draft saving for any emails, even ones I want to hold as drafts while working on them, and the saved draft disappears as soon as I click send.

Never having used Hotmail particularly in a Browser, then I suspect that there was some setting to enable that. That's certainly NOT normal behaviour. The point of a Drafts Folder is just that - it's
temporary storage for a mail that you've started but are not ready to send.

I don't understand why you would want to save an email to Drafts automatically - that's not what the Drafts folder is for. And yes, that's normal behaviour for the draft to vanish when the email
is sent - the email can be found in your Sent Items folder.

The only thing that I can think of, is that somehow, in the past, you have managed to set the Drafts Folder to be the location for sent emails.

Been using Hotmail since 1985. Have new HP laptop since 2016, still using Hotmail, now with Win10. Emails always have kept draft automatically, no need by me to tell it. I deleted some old drafts and now all drafts are gone and no drafts are saved--folder
tells me it has none. How do I recover my lost drafts and save all new ones automatically? I do not get a message do I want to save draft and never have gotten that in the past.
