Windows 10: Why won't my AirPods connect to my Surface Laptop 3?

My newly purchased Airpods will not connect to my Surface Laptop 3. I am able to pair them successfully. However, when I connect them, they will only connect when in their case. If I try to connect the AirPods outside of the case, my laptop does not register that they are there. It says "make sure your device is still discoverable." If I try to connect them in the case, have it work, then move them to my ears, it still doesn't work. I have even gone so far as to remove my AirPods from the recently connected devices on my iPhone and iPad in an attempt to connect with my laptop. As a side note, when it says they are connected, any audio playing on my laptop will not transfer over to the Airpods. Now, this a feature of the Airpods, that they won't play audio unless they are in your ears, however, it is still odd


I have tried the troubleshooting feature in settings for the Bluetooth twice, restarted my laptop multiple times, updated, and shut down many times too. Still nothing. This is the second time I have tried to connect something to my laptop via Bluetooth. The first was a Cricut a paper cutting device. The Bluetooth connection worked for a little while, then it no longer worked. I then had to connect my laptop to the Cricut with a cord. It still does not connect.


Since my AirPods won't connect either, does that mean that something is wrong with my Bluetooth in general?

Surface Laptop 3 with external monitor

Hi All,

Has anyone come across an issue with an external monitor blacking out while connected to a Surface Laptop 3? I have the laptop connected to a widescreen laptop with the Surface Dock. Both work fine however, once every hour or so the external monitor blacks out and comes back.

I've completed the following:

• Updated laptop drivers and firmware
  • Updated monitor drivers
  • Swapped out monitor
