  1. Why won't my computer recognize portable hdd?

I have an old HP desktop running W10. For some reason the CD/DVD writer won't burn discs or run files from a disc. All it does when I insert a disc is show the files on the disc and below that "files ready to burn". Also, my desktop has 8 USB slots that recognize my mouse and keyboard but nothing else.I ran the troubleshooter but after about 10 minutes of "resolving issues" and no action, I cancelled it.Is there any way to fix my computer so the CD/DVD writer and all USBs will work again?Thank you

    :)

    Portable HDD full but isn`t..

    Hi Graham,

In most cases, this may already point to a hardware issue. We suggest doing the following to properly isolate this:

    • Connect your portable HDD to a different port.
    • Connect your portable HDD to a different PC.
    • Connect other storage devices.

If you find that other storage devices work properly and your portable HDD still encounters an error with other computers, then this is already a hardware issue and you'll need to get in touch with the device manufacturer for assistance and troubleshooting.

Feel free to post back if you need more help.

Why won't my computer recognize portable hdd?

    Portable HDD not recognized

I have 2 WD portable HDD's that are not recognized by W10.

I plug them into an external Tripp-Lite USB 3.0 that I added as my PC is old and only has USB 2.0

I have never had an issue like this. I used both of these 2Tb portable HDD's for a couple years with zero problems. Since I upgraded to W10 I cannot plug either of these into the 3.0 USB port and have them recognized. I just plugged a thumb drive into the port and there was no problems.

Even rebooting doesnt help. I get a popup in the lower right corner of my PC indicating that "the last attempt at reading a USB drive failed (or some such) if this continues you might need to replace the unit. The units work fine with other Windows machines, just not mine since I upgraded to W10

    Help!
