    Why won't my external hard drive work?


    I took the hard drive out of an old Windows laptop and used a hard drive case to connect it to my computer for storage. It worked fine, until one time it just didn't work. I had used it on both Mac and Windows, but I don't think it's a Mac filesystem compatibility thing because it doesn't work on either OS.Windows disk management shows the drive, but it shows "No Media" and there is no space on it. I'm pretty sure there is. MacOS Catalina immediately says "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."Can anyone tell me what happened ? Maybe it's corrupted

    External Hard Drive

    Hi John,

    We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

    • Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
    • Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.
    The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.

    External hard drive not recognised

    Thanks for this. I've done what you suggested and been through all the steps mentioned in the article. The hard drive works fine on a Mac computer, and I've managed to copy the information on it. It must be a Surface issue so I'll try to get a chat line tomorrow.
