Windows 10: Widows defender scan is consuming lots of resources

Discus and support Widows defender scan is consuming lots of resources in Windows 10 Gaming to solve the problem; Windows defender's scan named as "Anti-malware service executable" simply is consuming a lot of resources and is constantly running in the background....     Windows defender's scan named as "Anti-malware service executable" simply is consuming a lot of resources and is constantly running in the background. And further, if we do a manual full scan if just peeking the CPU usage I have a i5-10th gen- upper midrange, just imagine the case of a few pc that barely reaches the minimum requirements.

    Put processes that consume a lot of resource on the top of the list in Task Mananger

    A main use of Task Manager is to find which program is consuming resources. Now we need to sort by CPU/sort by Disk/sort By network to find the problem. Its better if list all the huge resource consuming programs at the top of the list what ever the resource
    is so we don't need to sort in most cases.

    Thanks for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

    This issue might occur if you have set any task scheduler for Windows Defender.

    I suggest you to delete the task for Windows defender and check if it helps.

    Follow the below steps:


    • Search and open Schedule tasks.

    • In the left-hand menu, open the Task Scheduler Library, then select
      Microsoft >Windows >Windows Defender.

    • Double-click Windows Defender Scheduled Scan.

    • Select the Triggers panel, then select Delete.

    Windows defender custom scan does not scan external drives

    Hi Joe,

    to scan external drives using Windows Defender, follow the steps provided below.

    • Open Windows Defender.
    • Go to Settings tab.
    • Select the Advanced option.
    • tick the checkbox for Scan removable drives.
