Windows 10: Wife's Computer Folders and Documents have Red X's?

TL;DR: Can I get rid of those files and folders with the red x's, will that essentially remove any links to my wife's files and folders somewhere in the cloud if that's where they're at?

So, I left Windows towards the end of Windows 7 in 2018 so I have not really used Windows 10. But I am the "Computer Guy" in the house.

So my wife called me into the bedroom because she couldn't save her resume. She needs it for a job she's trying to get online as a tutor. Anyway, I go in there and she has a bunch of files in a couple of folders that all have red x's on them. One being her resume.

I can open it in Word 2007 but when I try to save it to her desktop, Word closes and the file is nowhere to be found. I checked her Documents folder, Desktop... Then I noticed something about OneDrive... I see she has a couple versions of her resume there. So I opened it up on whatever Word document editor is on OneDrive and I copied the text and pasted it into Word so she could have it on her computer. It's there now but Why is OpenDrive her default location to save files?

She does have 4 or 5 folders with red x's in the bottom left corner of each folder. She also has MANY files with that same red x... I'm assuming those are not available for her to edit on the computer but point elsewhere?

Also, she does have an internet connection. She was sending and receiving emails throughout the process so she is connected.

I've only missed one version of Windows and I'm somewhat lost in Windows 10. I don't know WTF OneDrive is. I'm guessing it's something to do with cloud computing? The documents are there but not on her computer?

I didn't do much cloud computing with Windows 7 and I don't do it in Linux (The OS I'm using now). We had terrible internet up until about a month ago so we all pretty much kept our files on the computer, on a thumb drive, etc. So Cloud Computing was not used in my house.

Red X symbol in front of Documents folder

Hi Rhonda_M

That red X, if it is in the bottom left corner of the Documents Icon, means OneDrive has not been successful in syncing that folder, there may be just one file in that folder which OneDrive cannot sync . .

The documents folder contains a lot of application data that is specific to each user. your best option is to have a folder inside the documents folder for all your files

Then in OneDrive Settings remove the documents folder form the list of synced items and add that folder winch contains only your files . . .

Why is there a red x in a circle beside my documents folder? Hovering over it says availability status: error

I have a folder called Documents which contains subfolders containing all my articles I have written. The Documents folder has a red “x” on it and if I open it, the folder is empty. However, if I look via file explorer they are
all there. Also, I cannot upload any of the files as I get a message they don’t exist.



How do I fix this?
