Windows 10: Wifi/Device Manager/Settings/Control Panel Stop Working Until reboot

So, this happens about every twenty minutes while using my PC, I can leave it alone for hours and come back and it will be fine then happen soon after.

The system apps like device manager/Settings/Control panel stop working and have problems and I cannot connect to the wifi.

checklist of things I've tried/know

• Wifi adapter is on max performance
• SFC, no problems
• Drives are healthy
• Activated windows
• Multiple scans with Mbam
• WIFI is working on my other laptops

Device Manager question

Mouse Settings are in Control Panel, not device mgr. Reboot the computer to see if that stops the errors.

 

Wifi adaptor

Try updating the driver for the Wifi Adapter.

Go to Control Panel, Device Manager, look for network adapters, right click on the wifi adapter, update it.

If that fails to find a new driver, right click on the driver and select uninstall, reboot, Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.

Another thing to try is to remove the Wifi Network on the main computer.

Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center, Manage Wireless Networks, highlight your network, select remove. Connect back to it, make sure you select Auto Connect when connecting back to it.

This is so strange. It almost sounds like some sort of shell incompatibility. Wifi adapter has latest drivers, yes?
SFC finds "no integrity violations".
SMART is healthy - have you run chkdsk /r on the OS recently?
Windows is activated.
MBAM finds nothing.
Are you using Defender or Bitdefender for AV?
Can you give us an installed programs list from Ccleaner?
Does this behaviour also manifest itself with a clean boot?
Is this a W10 clean install or an upgrade? If upgraded, from W7 or W8?

 

Wifi has it's latest drivers,

• SFC finds no integrity violations
• SMART is healthy
• Windows is active
• I used Windows Defender for AV, bitdefender causes Bad_pool_caller BSOD

This is a upgrade from windows 8, it also occurred there but it much less frequent. It was a clean upgrade, I installed W8 then upgraded right after.

I believe Java is on v8u91 - please remove the old ones and install fresh the latest (security issues)

Let's just make sure there is nothing lurking on the system first. Please download ADWCleaner. Run the program, but do not yet "clean" anything. Click Logfile and the log will pop up in notepad. Please copy and past the results here.

No, I mean, put the machine into a clean boot state, so nothing other than MS stuff runs, and see if the problem is resolved. If so, you start enabling things back 3 or 4 at a time, to see if you can identify the culprit.

Please go ahead and check the boxes for these three things, and run the cleaner.

Next, I would try the clean boot troubleshooting procedure. It will take some time, as rebooting is required as you enable things, but it should identify the culprit.

 

I really don't know if a clean boot will be successful. I've been able to use my PC today uninterrupted for hours by that bug.
It's like having a cockroach in your house, shows up once then runs off somewhere and hides for an extremely long time, then when you least expect it to appear, it does.


It always happens out of nowhere, no way to plan it.
It will take days at a time of waiting to confirm what it is, but I'll put in the effort if that's what it takes.

 

Yes, clean boot troubleshooting can take some time, especially in your situation, where it's so intermittent. It's up to you. Perhaps someone else will pop in with some further suggestions. *Smile

 

Alright, doing it now. I'm going to give each service 15 minutes then check all the places where the bug appears, so this will take about 5 hours or so.

 

Oh my - take your time. Do the clean boot, work normally with the computer. If it doesn't show up tonight, tomorrow, enable 3 or 4 items. Do it over the course of several days. Don't kill yourself over it. I never do. *Wink

 

Thinking about this now, I've done multiple clean installs of windows on this PC, even with new HDDs.
They've all experienced the same bug. Could it be some hardware incompatibility with windows 8/10, my wifi adapter only has drivers for windows 7.
