WiFi Keeps Turning Off/Disconnecting From Home Network

I am reaching a frustrating and maddening breaking point.

My WiFi continually disconnects itself (i.e. turns off) from my home network nearly every 10 seconds. The WiFi does not do this with every network I connect to, but it will not stay turned on at home. I'm rather skilled when it comes to troubleshooting and tech problem-solving, but I cannot figure out why the WiFi won't stay "on" when I am at home.

For example, my laptop will stay connected to my university's public WiFi, but it shuts itself off when I connect to home WiFi.

Here are some of the tricks I've already tried, to no avail:

    1. Going into power management settings and unchecking the box that allows Windows to turn off WiFi to save battery

    2. Updating everything

    3. Updating WiFi drivers

    4. Changing my home network from public to private in firewall settings

    5. Disabling different WiFi protocols

    6. Running WiFi drivers in compatibility mode

    Here are my computer specifications:

    1. ASUS A53E (purchased in 2012)

    2. Running Windows 10, up-to-date

    3. Qualcomm Atheros AR9485

    4. The WiFi router is a pretty basic router given to us by the internet company. I do have a NetGear AC1600 router I can switch it with, because my laptop will stay connected/on to that one

I absolutely love my ASUS laptop. Aside from this WiFi issue, its a smooth-operating machine that is given me virtually no problems until Windows 10 forced itself onto my computer. I really dislike Windows 10, as its been the bane of my issues. I think its generally compatibility issues because my machine is older.

I am happy to provide more details about my issue. I am currently using an Ethernet cord to stay connected.

    :)

WiFi not automatically disconnecting when out of range

    Gunnart,

I had a similar refusal to disconnect from a WiFi profile and I solved it.
    - In my particular case, the unwanted network was still in range so I cannot say for certain that my symptoms were exactly the same as yours but they were certainly consistent with yours.
    - The solution is not a destructive one so I do suggest you try it.

1 I turned WiFi off then repeated the fairly standard step of removing existing WiFi profiles - Settings, Networks, WiFi, Manage known networks, <select each one in turn>, Forget. Arguably, I could have just done this for the problem network but I was probably not thinking straight at the time.

2 I then opened RegEdit, went to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles
and deleted every subkey that referred to a WiFi network profile. Again, arguably, I could just have deleted all those that referred to the problem network.

3 I then turned WiFi back on and started from scratch detecting then connecting to the networks I wanted to use. There has been no repetition of the problem.

    Some further commentary
A I had changed my internet connection device but had re-used the same network name on the new one.
B There were no strange entries in the list in Settings [step 1 above] & I quite wrongly thought that forgetting them represented a complete clearout.
C When I looked the Registry key [my step 2 above], I found that there were two subkeys with the relevant network name in the Description line.
    - In one case, the same network name was repeated in the ProfileName line
    - But the other entry contained a Profilename entry that had the expected network name with a suffix [2] after it.
    - So my re-use of the name had been identified by Windows after all [I had just been trying to reduce the number of changes I had to work through when I swapped devices and had not thought there could be side-effects].

    Best of luck,
    Denis

    WiFi Internet Keeps Disconnecting

Hi Gerry Atric and welcome to the forum.*Smile

    lol *Biggrin

Don't know if you have tried this, but this is my suggestion:

    Settings >Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Manage Wi-Fi Settings
Go to the settings under the Wi-Fi Sense heading
Turn off "Connect to suggested open hotspots"
    and/or
Turn off "Connect to networks shared by my friends"
