Will a NAS work for me?

Im thinking of buying my first NAS but concerned that I may find it doesnt solve the problem I have with one of my laptops not being able to access shared folders. I currently have 3 devices and just need to have a central place to store and access all my files. The network uses a TPlink Archer C2300 router and I have a desktop PC running Win 7 connected to this by Ethernet. I also have a Lenovo W530 laptop and a Lenovo ThinkBook 15-IML which both connect to my network by wi-fi. The Archer router has a USB connection and I thought this would solve my storage problem and it has for the desktop PC and the W530 as I can access the router USB drive using file explorer/windows explorer from these. Nothing Ive tried on the Thinkbook 15-IML allows access to this drive however. In addition, although I can access shared folders on the Thinkbook 15-IML from both the desktop PC and the W530 I cant access either device from the Thinkbook 15-IML because although all devices show in file explorer Windows reports that it cant access them. Both laptops are running Windows 10 Professional version 20H2 and Ive been through every setting I can think of to make sure theyre configured identically so Im completely baffled as to why the Thinkbook 15-IML refuses to behave. My question is this. Since there is obviously a fundamental problem with my Thinkbook 15-IML accessing other computers and shared folders on the network will a dedicated NAS work with that machine? I should add that I would want access using file explorer rather than via the internet.

    :)

    Windows 10 & NAS Box

    Hi Peter,

A few possible reasons can cause this issue. To help us identify the cause of this problem, we would like to know the following information:

    • How is your NAS box connected to your computer? (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or USB)
    • Are you using a program provided by the manufacturer of your NAS box to access it?
    • Do you receive any error messages when accessing your NAS box? If yes, what is the exact error message?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?

In the meantime, we suggest that you perform the solution provided by omiklik (Most Helpful Reply)
in the following thread: Unable to see NAS drive on Network - Win 10 PC.

Keep us updated on the status of the issue, and we will be glad to assist you further.

  3. Network attached storage (NAS)

OKAY... I get the laptop thru all the updates by using the troubleshooter. Now I still cannot see my NAS in file explorer BUT there is one file listed in quick access that is on the NAS. If I open file location I can see everything on the NAS (WOOHOO)
but if I close file explorer and reopen it the NAS does not appear(?).

I am sure there is a small tweak that needs to be made but at least if I don't loose the quick access I will be able to access my files.

    One step forward!!!!

    Thanks,

    Len

p.s. still working on the desktop Will a NAS work for me? :(

The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.
