Windows 10: Will activation work?

So in my current build I am thinking of switching to a SSD.

My current Windows is a Windows edition upgraded from Windows 8.1.

If I buy a new SSD and install Windows in it with my key which I have used to clean install multiple times, will I lose my copy of Windows 10 because it was meant specifically for my hardware configuration with my Hard Disk?

I heard Windows 10 upgrade from 8.1 doesn't give you a retail key.

Can't Activate newly purchased windows 10 home

hi, I used the usb boot tool and installed windows 10S on my laptop. I realized I couldn't download anything not from the app store so I purchased windows 10 home. I was given a product key but it is not accepted in the activation settings. Just trying to
get this laptop operable.

Windows 7 to 10 upgrade error 80240031

Hi

I'm trying to upgrade to Window 10 from Windows Home 7 Premium 32 bit.

- When using Windows Update after the download completes and it tries to install it fails.

- When downloading the 32 bit
media creation tool and choosing to create a USB files it creates the USB file but fails during the install.

I can see with the Windows Update it fails with error: 80240031

When I run setup on the USB it just gives me a message saying there was a problem, but no information on what the problem was.

I've tried

- disabling antivirus

- disconnecting all devices (apart from keyboard, screen, mouse and usb key)

- doing a clean boot

- it's my home PC, and my account is Administrator

- a few years ago I had upgraded this same PC from Windows XP to 7

Pretty much followed all instructions given on this page: How to: Troubleshoot Common Setup and Stop Errors During Windows 10 Installation

Does anyone know what else I could try?

How can I find out what error I got when running setup from the USB key?

Swapping disks is perfectly ok. Activation should be automatic as MS's record is keyed to your MBO.

You don't have to clean install, you can use disk imaging to move everything from one disk to another.

However, with SSD you will want to use AHCI for better performance, so if you are currently set to use IDE, a clean install is easier. but it means you have to reinstall everything.... and of course you would need a current Win 10 bootable medium.

And of course I will be clean installing. Only savages don't clean install. And then pay the price by the most slowed down device ever.

What a dumb statement!


If pc is running fine, cloning will be fine as well.

In fact a clean install could run slower as you may need to optimise settings to get best performance!

 

My computer: W7>8>8.1>W10 since the beginning with with all Insider versions, substantial HW change in the mean time, end of savage story.
