Windows 10: Will "Fixing C: Stage 1" damage my files?

When I open my computer the screen just has the windows 10 logo and below it the Fixing C: Stage 1.I tried skipping this check but it doesn't do anything so I thought to just let it do its work but I'm scared that it might mess up my files This is the first time I've seen this happen and I don't have any backup of my files, pictures etc. Will everything be ok?

Fixing (C Stage 1

I updated my computer on Sunday. It restarted after the update but the log in screen would not boot up. It would not turn off so I removed the battery. After removing the battery I got the fixing (C) Stage 1. I let it run for 24 hours the first time but
it was running the cycle fixing c stage 1 and repairing errors. After that I removed the hard drive and attached it a school computer. The school computer wanted to format it but I said no because I didn't want to lose the files. Once I said no it made the
drive inaccessible. I put the drive back in the computer and it went straight to automatic diagnostic pc. I tried skipping the scan but then a get a blue screen that say it wasn't able to boot then it takes me to the repairing disk errors and fixing c stage
1 cycle. I tried turned on and off to get to the Windows Recovery to boot in safe mode but it won't allow me to do that. Is the drive gone? Is there a way for me to get my files? I really just want to get my files off of the drive.

Update: It just moved to stage 2. It is the first time it moved to stage 2. I am going to let it work and then update later to tell you all what happened.

 

Fixing C: in stages

I have a new laptop and as backing up my files to an external drive using Robocopy. It was going on for a long time and I didn't see any progress and was unable to find it in Task Manager, so I finally just shut it down for the night. In the morning when I rebooted, I got the message "Fixing C: Stage 1, .....ETA 20.31..." I left it alone for a while, then rebooted, and the same message came back. This time I left it to do its thing and it finally recovered, much to my relief. I reran Robocopy manually rather than in a .bat file so I could monitor and got everything moved over to my new laptop (whew!)

I've been using both, the old one on off as I get my programs installed on the new one. My question is this: What caused the "Fixing C:...." message? In other threads it was suggested that the hard drive was dying, but I haven't seen evidence of that, EXCEPT now and then a clicking for a moment or two, and then its gone.

Fixing (C Stage 1

Here are two options:

• Retrieve them from your external backup medium.
• Boot the machine with the Repair Mode File Explorer

If you need to use the second option, do this:

1. Use a friend's PC to visit Lazesoft Recovery Suite Free, Free Windows System Recovery, Free Data Recovery, Free Windows Password Recovery, Free Disk Clone
2. Click Free Download Now
3. Run the downloaded file lsrshsetup.exe
4. Launch the program
5. Burn a USB Disk (up the top)
6. Boot the problem machine with this disk, then copy your files to an external disk.
7. When finished, use this event as an incentive to set up a robust backup scheme.
