1. Will not Boot after problems with shutting down.

    Lenovo IdeaPad 710S-13ISK i5-6200U
    Windows 10

Used it on a normal day then all of a sudden it won't shut down. Kept going straight to lock screen. Nothing i tried would shut it down. Except long pressing the power key.

Next time i boot the computer it doesn't get to windows.

    1. Shows blue screen to ask me which language
    2. Troubleshoot or shut down.

When pressing troubleshoot the following menu is presented:

System restore - when pressed it asks me to select operating system at start but how? It doesn't prompt me for anything.
    Command prompt
    System Image recovery
    UEFI Firmware settings
Startup repair - tried this, it doesn't work
Go back to previous Windows version - tries this, doesn't work

I don't know for sure but I'm pretty sure windows update is to blame. I have mine installed in the background.

Honestly don't really fancy taking the laptop to a shop just to pay £30 for a checkup. Can anyone help me?

    :)

Trouble with booting into Windows 10 after November update

in safe mode, there was a windows update. The computer did not finish booting up. I had to use power button to shut off computer, and turn it back on, so it could finish updating. It onlhy happens after a windows update. If I shut down and restart,
there is no problem. Computer boots up normally. If I shut down completly and then use powerbutton to seut down, and then use power button to turn back on, there is no problem. It is only after a windows update, that it doesn't finish booting.

I written this so many times. Doesn't any one understand the problem?

can't boot after install windows 10

After I installed free version of windows 10, it is work properly. But after a few days i shut down the computer and turn on computer on the next day, I got the problem that my computer can't boot windows, at first it show windows' logo a few seconds and
then show black screen with have only mouse logo on the screen.

So I fix by myself by turn it off by press the power button and press start again and before going to boot the windows I pressed F2 going to setup screen and go to see the boot is disable or enable, after I checked it enable i pressed save and boot it again
which after that windows can boot and I can use it. But I still got the problem that the menu bar and all bottom tabs and icons, I can't click any icon even click the menu bar to shut down the computer. Therefore nowadays, if i want to shut down my computer,
i have to use right click on the mouse and click shut down. After shut down and turn on again I still got the same problem that windows can't boot and I have to go to setup page again and again

So pls kindly help how to fix this problem

  5. Hi Ken,

Really appreciate your advice but I'm a bit of a dumbass when it comes to these things. What is a rescue media? You mean i download something on a usb stick and then try to boot from it by changing the boot order in UEFI?

  6. If there is a error message please write down the error message for us.

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.

Please type below command into Command Prompt and press Enter key.

Following command will fixes errors on the disk and locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.

    Code: Chkdsk D: /r
Please replace partition letter D: with Windows installed partition letter. When computer boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) environment the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8 , 8.1 and 10 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch. The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assign any other drive letter usually D: drive letter is assign to Windows installed partition. The Bcdedit /enum | find "osdevice" command can be use to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition the output of the Bcdedit command is similar to this osdevice partition=D:. The drive letter after partition= is the drive letter of the Windows partition.

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.

Please type below command into Command Prompt and press Enter key.

The following command scans integrity of all protected Windows system files and repairs files with problems when possible.

    Code: Sfc /Scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=D:\ /OFFWINDIR=D:\Windows
Please replace partition letter D: with Windows installed partition letter. When computer boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) environment the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8 , 8.1 and 10 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch. 7. When you download and install Macrium Reflect one of the processes within it is to create rescue media. I very likely will prompt you to create.

You boot from this CD ( or USB) depending on what you created.

Edit: You need to start task to Create Rescue Media. Once installed look down left hand column, there is a heading other tasks. Expanding this, first item, create rescue media.

For the survey question today, for those users using Macrium Reflect.....

Did you add Macrium to boot menu on your machine?

This is what happens when i turn on the computer. No safe mode, no Windows recovery environment. Nothing. Just this.

I don't have a clue about the rescue media or how it works but I've just checked my disk with your instructions and both my D and C drive have no problems. Also there is no error logs when i try any other options.

What's confusing is when i select system restore and i've tried to do the same with cmd - it says "To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore. Restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore"

I only have windows 10...there are no other operating systems.

  10. Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is a recovery environment that can repair common causes of unbootable operating systems.

You have posted screenshot of the Windows Recovery Environment.

Windows installed partition you need to execute Chkdsk and Sfc commands. Please use Bcdedit /enum | find "osdevice" command to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition and execute Chkdsk and Sfc commands for this drive letter.

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.

Please type below commands into Command Prompt and press Enter key.

Following commands will repair Master Boot Record (MBR), Boot Sector and BCD Store.

    Code: Bootrec /FixMbr Bootrec /FixBoot Bootrec /RebuildBcd
11. Okay firstly,

I have tried countless times the Bcdedit line that you mentioned but it doesn't do anything. Literally no result no matter how many times i type it.

Sfc /scannow does a scan that ends with 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation"

The only way I've found to list partitions was using diskpart. There is only one disk.

  13. Will not Boot after problems with shutting down.

Either BCD data store is damage or boot files are damage lets first try to repair BCD data Store.

Since the BCD store exists and lists a Windows installation, you'll first have to "remove" it manually and then try to rebuild it again. At the prompt, execute the bcdedit command as shown and then press Enter:

Execute below command to point Command Prompt to C: drive.

    c:

    bcdedit /export C:\bcdbackup

The bcdedit command is used here to export the BCD store as a file: bcdbackup. There's no need to specify a file extension.

The command should return the following on screen:
    The operation completed successfully.

Meaning the BCD export worked as expected.

At this point, you need to adjust several file attributes for the BCD store so you can manipulate it. At the prompt, execute the attrib command exactly like this:

    attrib c:\boot\bcd -h -r -s

What you just did with the attrib command was remove the hidden, read-only, and system attributes from the file bcd. Those attributes restricted the actions you could take on the file. Now that they're gone, you can manipulate the file more freely - specifically, rename it.

To rename the BCD store, execute the ren command as shown:

    ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

Now that the BCD store is renamed, you should now be able to successfully rebuild it.

Try rebuilding the BCD again by executing the following, followed by Enter:

    bootrec /rebuildbcd

Restart your computer after rebuilding the BCD store.
