So long story short, my PC has been having a LOT of issues lately and pretty soon I'm going to reinstall windows since nothing I've tried seems to work. You can check my post history to get an idea of what's going on if you like.

Basically, I have three drives connected to my computer: my basic C drive, where windows and some other programs are, and my D and E drives, where stuff like personal files (pictures, videos, other files etc) are kept. I've tried transferring the contents of the D and E drives to a separate, external hard disk, but due to the issues my PC is having, I keep getting SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION errors during the transfer, cutting it short, so I basically gave up trying.

So if I go to reinstall windows, it WONT mess with the contents of the D and E drives, right? Only the drive it's installed on? (C, in my case).

  3. Windows 7 booting off wrong drive?!?!?

Please move if this is in the wrong place.

I have two hard drives, a 1.5TB drive, and a 160GB drive. Windows is installed on the 1.5TB drive, as are all my files and programs. The 160GB drive has a bunch of old files, and apparently the bootmgr and boot folder. Nothing else is on the 160GB drive, other than media files etc.

If I remove the 160GB drive from the machine, windows refuses to boot, plug it back in, it works fine. The setup with two hard drives I have now is temporary, as the 160GB drive will go into another machine.

My question is, can someone give me a step by step on how to make windows force to boot off the 1.5TB drive, ignoring the 160GB drive in the boot process completely?
I don't know how to do this in Windows 7, on XP I would just run the /fixmbr command and its related ones.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Note: I would really really rather not have to wipe and reinstall, I know it can be done without one as I've had this issue with XP before.

Will reinstalling windows only affect the drive windows is installed on, and not other drives?

cant install windows 8 on my cruciall ssd drive

Yeah, that was going to be my next suggestion. You can actually access the command prompt from inside the Windows installer, then run DiskPart and do a Clean command on the drive.
