  1. Will updates ever install if you just shut down?

Just trying to fathom this out, but I have on a couple of occasions happened to look in windows update, and noticed updates are ready to install, on a restart - either immediately if I choose to, or scheduled for a time I'm not using the machine (in my case it says 3.30am). Now, a couple of times I've tried a shutdown, then a boot from off, rather than selecting a restart, and nothing happens, the updates don't get installed.

So, my question is this - Suppose I were never to look at what windows update was doing, and just shut the machine down each evening when I've finished using it, would this mean the updates will never install?

    :)

  2. Can you tell me if the HTC One M8 will ever get the Windows 10 upgrade?

According to the Upgrade Advisor, "Your phone is not supported......". I have seen others get a message that indicates that they might get it in the future. I don't see this as a Microsoft problem. Verizon advertised the phone as being able to get the upgrade
when the sold it, and FTC said they would support for two years. I just completed year one. I would just like to get a straight answer on whether or not this phone will ever get the Windows 10 upgrade.

    Thanks

It will cost you 100 GBP if you install win 10 from ISO instead of waiting for upgrade download.

What happened to the free upgrade promised. Used Msofr media to download and produce an ISO which when installed will cost 100 GBP to activate, no warnings given that this will wipe your old system product key and you will not be able to revert back to old
    op system.

Msoft at its best or worst depending.

I also don't understand why MS allows you to put off installing updates (security) for days if so desired, makes no sense to me.

Updates should still install when you use shutdown instead of restart of whatever else. They do for me

  6. Nope. I've just shut the machine down twice now, and powered back up, the same updates are still sat there, with the words "requires restart" underneath them. This is silly if this is the case surely?? How can they expect everybody to look at windows update every day and manually restart, or leave their machine on all night?

    @spark001uk

Like I said, it works for me. Unless I'm uniquely unique, it must be something in your settings. Try disabling 'fast startup' in your Windows Power Options.

Certainly sounds like its going into Sleep/Hibernation mode rather than shutdown.

could you post your Power settings plan details.

  12. Lid close is set to do nothing on both.
Sleep is set to sleep after: never on both, allow hybrid sleep is off on both, hibernate after is set to never on both, wake timers is disabled on batt and important timers only on ac.
Power button action is sleep on both.
Low batt action is set to do nothing on both. Critical batt action is set to hibernate on batt, and do nothing on ac.

Its the power button action then,
Your computer never actually turns off.

  14. I don't shut it down on the button, I use power / shut down on the start menu. However, I just enabled unavailable power options and I see I have fast start active. But according to an article I read earlier, if I disable fast start I also disable hibernate, which I want to keep in case of a critical battery. Unless I'm wrong? It's not too bad though, I also found out I can just hold Shift and click shut down, and it performs a genuine shut down.
I suppose if the hibernate disabling I read about isn't true then I could disable fast start, will it make much of a difference? Bearing in mind it's a new ultrabook, with an 8GB/1TB SSHD?

Hibernate and fast startup are co-dependent. Like I twice said before, disabling 'Fast Startup' is the option you want to disable if you want to automatically install updates on shutdown with a single click. *Smile That was what you asked for in your original post. Hence why I made the suggestion. *Wink
