Will Windows 10 work with DG31PR motherboard?

Hi, does anyone know if Win 10 will work with DG31PR? Support page - http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support...pboards/dg31pr

Supported OS page confirms that Windows 8 is not supported. I don't know how to link to a specific part of a page but you have to click on Discontinued Boards and it shows it there.
    http://www.intel.com/support/motherb.../CS-008326.htm

Now, since Win 8 is not supported I assumed the same applies to Win 10. But I recently read an article that said Windows 10 will work on older hardware.

    Thanks for reading!

    Don.

  2. Sleep mode never entered Windows 10

Sleep mode never entered. Screen does go off at 10 minutes (per the setting). Hard drive is set to shut down at 20 min (it is an SSD so I don't know if it does or not). Sleep should occur at 30 minutes but the system never enters sleep. Windows 10
is at version 1607 build 14901.1000. CPU is a Core 2 Duo E4600. Motherboard is an Intel DG31PR (J3E1).

If Windows 8 is not supported, then chances are Windows 10 won't be either. It's an unfortunate thing that Intel basically abandons their desktop boards not long after they stop selling that model.

Chances are, if it's unsupported, it means that either BIOS or some driver is incompatible and Intel has not bothered to update it.

My previous PC had an Intel motherboard and they dropped support so I could not run Win8 without a chip set upgrade and Intel never supplied that. I trust Asus, Gigabyte over Intel for motherboards.

A lot of people think, oh Intel makes great processors, they must make great motherboards too. Well, they don't. They're not bad quality per se... but they have ZERO features... you can't overclock them, you can't do anything out of spec from what Intel requires. And don't even think about trying to run a Server OS on a desktop motherboard.. UNSUPPORTED.

And as soon as the wind changes direction, they drop support and you're stuck with a pile of junk.

Sorry, yeah, been burned by Intel a few too many times with motherbards... Processors are amazing.. motherboards suck.

    I know right?

That's a shame. Because even though the PC is five years old, I've upgraded the RAM to 4GB, and it works perfectly fine. I would have liked to upgrade to Windows 10 though.

Unfortunately, I don't think I can upgrade just the Chip Set as it's glued to the MoBo. I did buy this off the shelve, so I shouldn't expect much. I've heard for Desktops custom built is the way to go, and this is one example why. Of course, I could always change the MoBo...

That's good advice. I had no idea Intel MoBo had so many restrictions. I'm definitely going to keep that in mind the next time I build a PC.

  10. I'm running Windows 8.1 on a DG31pr. It's just a matter of getting information on how to install Windows 8 without UEFI.

Now... I think that's as far as you can go, though. I believe for Windows 10 you MUST have UEFI on.

I slammed forward and installed windows 10 for free. Interestingly it completed. At first I though I was good, but then I noticed the PC would notdetect my USB Lexmark printer. Then I noticed windows would not detect my DVD d: drive.

Other than those 2 things everything else was transparent. Probably will roll back to Windows. Its too much of a hastle to be without a printer or dvd drive.

I will say with everything else working fine, on the surface, seems like there wouldn't be a heck of a lot of work involved for the boys (or girls) at Intel to modify the driver to get a couple of pieces of hardware working. That's too bad the drivers stopped at win 7. *Sad

That may or may not have anything to do with Intel support for the board.

I've seen a number of posts from people whose optical drives disappeared from Windows. Sometimes the drive will show up in Device Manager in "other devices". I suppose that it'd be too much to expect that removing the device and rebooting would persuade Windows to recognize it correctly, but it may be worth a try.

As for the USB Lexmark printer, I'd unplug it, and remove it from Devices. Plug it back in, and try the "add printer" thing. If that doesn't work, I'd try re-installing the Lexmark driver package, in the hope it'd see the printer again.

If you have done all that unsuccessfully, I'm mostly out of ideas.

Will Windows 10 work with DG31PR motherboard?

All the dg31pr fans, go ahead and upgrade to windows 10. I got my optical drive working. The optical was plugged into the SATA2 connector. That SATA2 port was disabled in BIOS (found out after the fact. dont understand how it ever worked with windows 7). I moved the optical SATA connector to SATA1. Windows picked up the optical immediately.

So this is my motherboard SATA configuration
    SATA0- 250 gig HD
    SATA1- lite-on optical dvd
    SATA3- disabled
    SATA4- disabled

As far as the Lexmark printer is concerned. Once the lite-on was working I used the install disk (from 2006, yea 2006) to get a working printer driver installed.

Nothing fancy here on my machine, Stock video, network, 250 gig sata HD, lite on SATA optical drive. I'm not a gamer. I just need a PC for Office, email, web.

So anyway this is what I did. After inheriting the DG31RP from my wifes co-worker, I ordered a 32 bit copy of windows 7 off ebay, installed it.
Then did all the updates. No Windows 10 app, so I downloaded the MediaCreationTool.exe from Microsoft, ran it and chose the selection "update to windows 10".
After an hour or so, and a bunch of reboots it was done, but I had no DVD. I did what I described above to fix the SATA/DVD.

So hold off before throwing away your old intel motherboard.

    Good luck all.
