  1. Will windows still boot on the first drive if I delete the partitions on my second drive?

    Hello All,

I've treated myself to a new SSD.

I've moved my old HDD to the secondary slot with windows still installed - its slow but can still be used for storage.

Installed windows 10 on the SSD.

Moved my data over to the SSD.

I was about to delete the partitions and format the old drive when I noticed that the SSD has only a single partition.

My concern is that if I delete the EFI partition from the second drive that I won't be able to boot into the windows on the SSD Note - I do not want to boot into the windows stored on the HDD any more.

My question is: Will windows still boot on the first drive if I delete the partitions on my second drive?

    Many thanks in advance

    :)

    W7 Hard drive partition issue

to get rid of that 100 meg windows partition that setup creates for you on a new install on a blank hdd:

    - press shift+f10 when on the partition management screen in setup <-- this opens a command prompt
    - diskpart <-- start the windows command line partition management tool
    - list disk <--- list the installed hdds in this computer for the next step
    - select disk 0 <- might have to replace 0 with the number of the correct disk
    - clean <-- this will erase all data on the disk you selected one step up- dont use the wrong disk!
    - create partition primary <- creates a primary partition taking up all space on the drive, adjust the command if necessary
    - exit, exit to exit diskpart and the command prompt
    - click refresh in partition manager and select your newly created partition and install to that

2 of my internal hard drives, not been reconized!!

In that case do what Blue-Knight suggested and delete the partitions from the Windows install disk. Leave just the two drives you want to format plugged in and boot to the Windows install disk. When you get to the disk manager delete the partitions so the drives only show unpartitioned space.

Once you do that turn off the computer and boot into Windows. Now you can partition and format the blank drives through disk manager or using diskpart.

Will windows still boot on the first drive if I delete the partitions on my second drive?

can I use 3TB drive as data drive?

Do not delete the 100mb or 350mb boot sector that windows creates. 3 Tb drives require a GPT partition not MBR. Another thing to remember is if you format and install windows on a drive and another drive is connected to the motherboard Windows will place the boot partition on the second drive. If you remove the second drive the first will not boot.

Also I dont understand what your trying to do here. You have a SSD why are you booting from your 3 Tb ?

Your picture shows two boot records because both are on that drive. Do not have a second drive attached when doing a windows install

Start over delete everything install the SSD and windows. After the install is complete and working. Only then atach the 3 Tb drive and change the partition type > Change a Master Boot Record Disk into a GUID Partition Table Disk
