Win 10 1607, is it needed?

I'm using Win 10 on a PC, I mostly do video and photo editing and viewing, and the general internet browse. Is 1607 anything special, is it needed for future updates or is it more specific to touch screen users and the like? I'm new to 10, upgraded from 7, liked XP more as it was very stable. I build and upgrade my own PC as I see fit and need.

    :)

  2. Window Automatic Update for Win 10, Ver 1607 on Win 10, Ver 1511

Since Feb of this year there have been 12 successful automatic updates on this HP PC. There have also been 10 unsuccessful updates. The unsuccessful updates were for Win 10, Ver 1607 and non of the successful updates for Ver 1607. The PC originally
had Win 7 and was upgraded to Win 10 Home in July of 2016. In Nov of 2017, Microsoft Tech uninstalled the Win 10 Home and installed Win 10 Prof. The current build is Win 10, Ver 1511, 10586.839. Are these Ver 1607 updates for this computer? Why are they
    all failing?

  3. My Windows 10 PC does not recognize my Windows 10 Mobile Lumia 735

    Hi,

There was an update (Win 10 1607 14393.105) for the PC, now the USB connection works fine.

The phone was Win 10 1607 14393.67, it did already connect on WIN7 PCs.

So it seems the problem was the previous version of WIN 10 on the PC...

There are two types of Windows 10 updates, security and bug-fix updates, and Features Updates. There have been two Features Updates so far, 1511 and 1607. The same security/bug-fix updates are released simultaneously for all three versions, these are the Cumulative Updates normally released each 'Patch Tuesday'. You can still get such updates even if you have the original 10240 version: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4000823

Features updates are not necessary to remain secure, what they do is add new features or improve existing ones. With 1607 Edge gained the ability to add extensions, for example. The Start menu was redesigned and more settings were moved from Control Panel into the Settings app.

The question is how have you avoided 1607 so far? Even Pro's 'defer updates' option will no longer keep it at bay, not now that 1607 is on the Current Branch for Business ring Windows 10 1607 is now a Current Branch for Business (CBB) release – Windows for IT Pros

Exactly. Normally when an upgrade to the next major version (10240 to 10586 to 14393) fails it is because something is corrupt in the current Windows installation. The corruption may also be preventing the current Windows installation from receiving any updates.

I saw a post on this forum last week that updates for v1511 ended this month which convinced me to update to v1607, although this update was not problem free for me on 2 PCs.

The reason I didn't upgrade to 1607 was because I was using Win 7 and hadn't logged onto 10 in a few months. Win 10 was the free upgrade from Win 7. Why it won't work I have no idea. It says it's installing the update but at 21% restarts and I'm back to build 1511 and it says updates failed to install.

Something is corrupt in your current Windows 10 installation. You can start by right clicking on the start icon and selecting Command Prompt (Admin). Then run:

    sfc /scannow

SFC is a built-in Windows utility and stands for System File Checker.

I'm in the process of doing that now. I've used that before when I was trying to get updates for Win7 but don't remember what it actually does. I'm still learning how to navigate in WIn10.

SFC found nothing wrong. Here is my update history. I didn't realize I had so many updates that failed. Should I try to get the failed updates?

I didn't realize all the failed to install updates were the same and then it was finally successful.

Why isn't 1607 showing up in failed to install? This is why I get so frustrated with Windows and I can see why the average PC owner gets so frustrated. Uggghhhh

If you click on the start icon, type winver and run it, what do you get?
