Windows 10: Win 10 Activation Failure After Upgrade from 8.1

I recently upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro to 10. The installation completed, but downgraded my installation from 8.1 Pro to Win10 Home. I have installed all available windows updates and rebooted my system. After a bit of googling, I then used ShowKeyPlus to find my product key and enter it into the page in the settings. After rebooting, Windows recognized my key and upgraded my installation to Enterprise and now tells me that my installation is not activated. I still have my original Win 8.1 Pro product key in an email from when I purchased it, but Windows does not seem to want to accept it,

Windows 10 activation question

Hi,

I own a legal licence of Win 8. Can I format my drive and install Win 10 and then activate it with my Win 8 key? Or will I have to install Win 8 and then upgrade to Win 10?

There has been so much written about all the ways we can upgrade but I haven't seen the answer to this yet. I want to do a clean install and don't want to do an upgrade.
