  1. Win. 10 all burning programs will not burn a CD

this looked like the best place to post this, if not please direct me.

now that my XP machine has died I am using my Win 7 upgraded to Win 10 and having issues with burning music CD's. Receive this message as disc is ejected:
Windows Media Player cannot burn the files. If the burner is busy, wait for the current task to finish. If necessary, verify that the burner is connected properly and that you have installed the latest device driver.

Some of the things I have tried/verified with no luck:
    Latest driver: check (~10 times)
Busy? I don't know what would be trying to use it - no files in explorer waiting to burn
Connected properly----would hope so but not opening it up just yet
Ran the onboard troubleshooter which made it the default disc player (only one in laptop)
No, have not tried another Mfg. disk yet
Have tried to burn a 'data' CD with no luck
Just tested making a DVD (Roxio) and does not show up as a DVD when reinserted.
Was able to play a commercial music CD even rip it.
    Need I say help?

    :)

  3. Win. 10 all burning programs will not burn a CD (see text for error message)

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand your concern, In order to assist you in a better way please answer the below questions.

    1. Do you see any bang or mark on the files you're trying to burn?

    2. Are the files protected?

We suggest you to remove the files (the files on which a bang or mark is displayed) from the burn list and try burning the CD.

    a. Copy the files you want to burn & click on Start burn.

    b. An error message appears "Windows Media Player cannot burn some of the files. To investigate the problem, click the icon next to the files in the burn list."

    c. Click OK.

    d. Then on the left hand side of the screen click on "Blank Disk“.

    e. The files you are trying to burn should appear. One or more should have a White X in a Red circle to its left. One or more of them are the files that won't burn.

    f. Just remove those that have the icon appearing and the burn should work.

Hope the information helps, if you have any further queries, feel free to post. We are here to assist you.

    Regards,

Win. 10 all burning programs will not burn a CD

Hi, I would suggest trying the driver you previously used- upgrading to Win 10 does not always mean you have the 'best' driver for your hardware. However, a driver problem for this would probably be unusual. Try the latest recommended manufacturer's driver.

If that works, in the tutorials section you can find out how to protect your driver from being overwritten by Windows (any driver different to what Win 10 expects will be overwritten!).

Other than that, try free burning software e.g. Starburn, Imgburn... for comparison.

First, the ONLY drivers for CD/DVD drives (optical of any type) is the default built in Windows driver.

If you have Roxio installed, first is it Win 10 compatible? Second the Roxio drag to disc is known to conflict with other burning programs. You may want to even uninstall Roxio (I've found it buggy).

The suggested Imgburn or CDBurnerXP are popular free burning programs.

  6. I have to agree about Roxio being a little buggy but gave it a try for lots of reasons, however at lease I can uninstall this and try again. TY

Why not try some other DVD burning software for Windows 10 instead of Windows Media Player?
If the all the DVD burning software fails to burn files, there is something wrong with your DVD driver.

Hi Highlife192, as we don't seem to be getting too far, can you advise if your CD/DVD drive is built in to your laptop or connected by USB?

And did it work in Win 7?

  9. the CD/DVD unit is built into this POS Dell laptop that I hurriedly purchased when the 'scare' of XP going away. Should have gotten a bit more computer.....first thing I had to do was add memory...

Started out running win 7 and really did not use it (computer or disc drive) until my XP machine died 2X. Was using the old machine to do my burning. Not really sure if this disc drive/burner ever worked. Next step to to try to get dell to help or just replace the disc drive or?????

very frustrated and about to give up altogether.

    thanks anyway
