Win 10 boot from usb but not sata

Recently I move hard drive from old computer to my new computer. It has win 10 installed. I can only get it to boot to safe mode when it connected to sata. If I take it out and connect it to usb it will boot to win 10 fine without any problem. What could be the problem?

    :)

  2. Windows 10 USB boot

Hi there, am not a windows 10 expert. I have a pc in the bedroom on windows 10, I messed up the bootloader trying to fix the xp on that system.

System wont boot, trying to repair via win 10 usb installer.

Downloaded the media creation tool to install windows 10 installer on usb stick. Not compatible with a host of usb sticks I have. Tried the usb sticks that others use, but I think they use rufus; as the media creation tool by win 10 does not detect the usb stick.

So quick question, the win10 machine i am trying to repair the bootloader is a win7 upgraded to win10.
If i were to use the usb win10 installer to "repair installation" does the version of the iso downloaded via the media creation tool matter?

    There is three options:
    Windows 10
    Windows 10 Home
    Windows 10 N

Also is there a step by step instead of using rufus as I want to try an alternative method of creating a usb win 10 installer. Preferably with more compatibility.

    System is a asus sabertooth 990 (r2?) with AMD phenom X 6.

Also is there any other software I can load onto the usb that can repair the bootloader easily?
That would be the ideal alternative. Thanks

    Help with USB Boot Image

I am trying to boot from my USB flash drive. I followed the instructions step for step that are in the article on this website. I downloaded the HP program and the USB Image zip file. I ran the HP flash program and pointed it to the folder where I unzipped the USB Image files to. I then copied all the files over to the USB memory stick as instructed. When I restart my computer and press F12 to go to the boot menu I have 3 options: SATA hard drive, CD-ROM drive, or USB Device. So I choose USB device and when it reads the USB memory stick all I get is the error "Non-system disk, replace and hit any key" Its like the USB memory is missing some system files or it doesnt have the master boot record or something. Somebody please HELP!!! I want to flash the bios in a new video card and I have to boot to DOS and I dont have a floppy drive and I have Win XP so a USB boot is probably the best option I have.

Win 10 boot from usb but not sata

Win 10 will not boot up with active usb devices plugged in

All USB devices keep windows 10 from booting, but work fine once system is booted.

Product Name: Presario SR1820NX MB A8N-LA Nagami Bios: 3.11

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

This very old machine has run windows XP and windows 7 without error.

However windows 10 will not boot if any device is plugged into any usb port on the machine (this is new since windows 10 install). Actually this was the source of most of my upgrade failures (C1900101-20017) error in particular. It took a week of experimenting
to discover this, and this message is being typed using my old serial keyboard and mouse on the machine. I reset the cmos and thought it might be the boot order, but it is not.

I think Microsoft has to modify the boot software as regards USB devices being present as they had it for win 7.

SOLVED: Found option to disable USB legacy devices in BIOS. Disabled it and Win 10 will now boot with USB devices plugged in.

Also a Windows 10 boot and install problem workaround as follows:

The master boot drive would not install windows 10 running off the sata port (Same drive with win 7 home installed). I don't know why as yet, but I was successful in installing windows 10 on this machine using a sata to ata converter that I had from the
old days. The install was accomplished booting off ide ribbon cable as device 0 port 0. Windows 10 boots and runs fine with this config, but not if i put the sata cable back on... I will keep trying things to fix this as well, but for now I'm glad it is installed
    and running.

All other sata devices cause no problems. I think these two problems may be causing many of the problems with win 10 upgrades. The sata problem also causes a forever loop during the initiation of the upgrade from within win 7 with a "Working on it" message.

SOLVED: Set the sata drive with the Windows-10 boot partition in the BIOS to the primary boot drive in the boot order settings. This allowed me to remove the SATA/ATA converter and boot from the sata drive.

Some of this info may help others.
