Win 10 Build 10049 - Problems with Homegroup and Sharing

    Andy:

My problem I believe is related to yours. I will start by saying I often know a little about a lot of things so my knowledge can sometimes be dangerous. When I upgraded my two computers to Windows 10 (1 Desktop Win 7 Home Premium and 1 Laptop Win 7 Home) I repeatedly kept attempting to create new Homegroups but each time they would disappear and I would find there was an old "ghost" homegroup from an old computer only allowing to join an already established homegroup and the new passcode entry would run, and run, and run, without ever connecting. I would then learn there was still detected an existing homegroup. What I did is below and I understand this may also fix problems related to joining a legitimate homegroup as well- it was a fix originally found for Windows 7 but worked with my new Windows 10.

In short, you need to remove some files from the Peer Networking folder in order to fix this problem. First make sure in your folder options you "show hidden files and folders".

You then delete all files in PeerNetworking (including folders); c:\windows\serviceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking.

I started both computers (would have opened them all if I had more) and did it on each machine on the network and then immediately went to "Leave the Homegroup"- (left-click on either the wired network icon or the wireless network icon in the bottom right of the taskbar, then click on Network Settings, Homegroup, and click "Leave the Homegroup"). I then shut down the computer I was not creating the new Homegroup on, created the Homegroup on my desktop computer, got the passcode, and opened my laptop.

Great news- it worked! I was able to open the "Network and Sharing Center" by right-clicking on the network icon, and next to "Access Type", "Homegroup" it said something to the effect of "available". When I clicked on "available" it asked for the passcode, I entered the one given when I created the new homegroup, and everything was good to go from there! I hope this helps and yours is as simple to solve! Good luck my friend!
