Windows 10: Win 10 Clean Install failure

I have a Dell 5423 laptop core i7 with a 250GB M2 SSD and 500GB SSD. This laptop now my spare has been running Win 10 for many years with no problems. I recently tried to do a clean install of Win 10 and it now continually fails. It loads all of the files and then at the restart it does Getting Devices Ready, Starting Services, Getting Devices Ready and then Getting Ready...at this point an unreadable error message flashes and then black screen. When I power the laptop on it says that computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. I have tested the USB and windows download tool on another PC and that works correctly

To prove that there are no hardware errors on the laptop I installed Ubuntu successfully. I suspect that with the Windows install there might be some sort of chipset software or missing driver. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Win 10 clean install question

So I spend the day yesterday installing the computer, using a prepared usb key with windows 10 on it.

I got it all sorted in the end but I'll share my fails anyways so others might learn:

Do not try to do a clean install win with win 10 home N, when you come from a machine with just win 10 home. It won't activate *Wink After reinstalling with the right copy, it was already activated right away after the first boot, didn't even have to initialise it.

There hasn't changed a whole lot in making clean install compared to older versions of windows, it's slightly better streamlined, though being asked at 3 different stages to enter a product key when it's not needed during install seems a bit annoying.

Further more it would be lovely if Microsoft finally learned to ask ALL questions regarding preferences updates and whatnot in one go, so you can then go away from your computer and come back to a fully installed/updated system including reboots.. Not impossible I would say.


There's still some little bugs, like when I installed realtek audio drivers, they'd go into an infinite loop asking for reboot and install the driver. And as a PDF reader isn't in the list of standard programs to select, foxitreader keeps saying it is not the default reader for pdf's even though I had said yes to the question 3x. If this fails to get file associations for PDF's I do hope Microsoft will fix this asap.

Win 10 refresh and clean install failure

Kalpana - Thanks for the response. This is a Samsung All-in-One Desktop PC. Mod # is at beginning of 1st post.

As for Step #1.

I do not have a desktop or any way you listed to open a CMD window. The only way I get to a command prompt is to use the recovery off the DVD I burned. So I ran the 2 commands from the X:/sources prompt if that matters.

Here is the result of step #2 commands:

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth ->

"Error 50. DISM does not support servicing Windows PE with the /online option."

sfc /scannnow ->

"Beginning sytem scan. This process will take some time."

"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again"

Restarting did not change anything. Still goes to a blank screen and stops. Brightness is up to max.

Recapping - Windows does not boot, it hasn't booted since I began this mess. It did update to Win 10 successfully last week and worked ok. The current problem is the result of wanting a clean install.

As for resetting or using go back function, neither is an option at this point so this is a clean install. I tried the reset option after the first failure. The drive has been wiped and new partitions created multiple times by the installer. I do not
care about the old data I lost, I just want to get Win 10 installed at this point.
