    Win 10 Installation - Immediate Re-Boot

    Hi all,

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit (hoping to "upgrade" to Windows 10 Pro).

In my Windows 10 Installation attempt, I am presented with the window shown in the attachment and I select the "Start the upgrade now" button. My computer promptly shuts down and reboots and I am back in Windows 7 putting me back at square one.

Note that this is not the "endless reboot" problem others have reported after their initial installation of Windows 10. My problem is the initial installation doesn't even get started. It simply reboots my machine exactly as if I had selected "Restart" from the Start menu.

How can I find the underlying cause?

    :)

  2. Windows magnifier problems in Win 10

Thanks but the link states it applies to Win 8.1. The magnifier worked perfectly on 8.1 but problems started immediately I upgraded to Win 10. I have tried re-boot but no improvement. In addition to the previous issues (flickering and making drop-downs
invisible), I have had Magnifier stop working twice since I booted up this morning - just a few minutes ago.

    Cortana and search not working.

Immediately after Windows 10 installation, Cortana function great. However, later after re-booting Cortana no longer works

  4. Win 10 Installation - Immediate Re-Boot

Welcome to the club! and the Ten Forums as well. *Smile tbaxter I ran into a very similar situation here when first trying to upgrade over a temp install of 7 Ultimate x64 in order to set up a dual boot with both versions. And every attempt failed some with an error code popup to go with it.

Cause? and effect? Try unplugging any additional drives or devices you have plugged in and then try again! Unlike how 7 would go right on with two additional storage drives present to the host/boot drive 10 does things a little bit differently like finding the boot files went onto one of the storage drives while the BT and WS temp installation folders were found on the other! None made to the target OS drive until those others were unplugged!

  6. Did that when first seeing the initial upgrade buggy but only after 10 was up and running as well as activated. The upgrade over the upgrade however wouldn't activate afterwards resulting in a full clean install. You'll notice I added the links for most of the installation guides into my sig for people to have ready access when pointing to them.

When just seeing to it a 32bit 7 Home Premium OEM preinstalled copy of 7 was upgraded to the 32bit 10 Home edition the first time around the Start button was missing and you saw nothing at all in the Settings and couldn't open up the Apps or only see a thin vertical line when right clicking on anything! I immediately performed a clean install since 10 is activated without a key before you reach the desktop the first time during the last part of the set up. I am now seeing another change from 32bit to 64bit with another clean install after just having put various programs on but have the need for the 64bit flavors of those.

The time is worth the effort since you end up with a nice fresh install of everything when the first initial upgrade proves to be buggy as long as you saw that activated on the initial install. Otherwise you have to revert back if possible to the previous and upgrade all over again to see the second upgrade activate. This new way to upgrade if not by removable media with the immediate upgrade option as well as seeing the media created for the upgrade can prove just that. Buggy!

Fortunately if you are not ready for a fresh clean install but still need a repair option you can either try a few things like running the System File Checker in case any system files didn't go on fully, Wipe the drive entirely after first backing things up in case of a problematic partition table resulting in disk error which will gum up the works, or on a good primary the quick and easy repair without a full clean install would be... I ended up uninstalling a piece of software called, "Comodo Programs Manager", and that seemed to do the trick. For good measure I also uninstalled Magic Disc and detached all my external (USB) drives, but I think the removing Comodo is what ultimately made it work.

Well it's good you were able to correct the problem while the news about Commodo isn't so good on the other hand. You likely need the last or latest version for 10 for that software as I needed the latest 2015 or 2016 beta for VIPRE Internet Security to run on 10 here.

Having moved up the ladder 3 versions in one shot you have to expect you will be needing the new or latest fro some other things as well due to any compatibility issues like what you just ran into there. Here I simply went with the life time subscription and simply keep looking for the yearly upgrade when the next av build arrives. I had 2014 on 7 until 10 went on and had to at first the 2016 beta and then grabbed the finished 2015 version until later.
