Win 10 issue has me stumped!

Hello all. Attempting to help and elderly church friend with an issue that just came up with her PC. She saw a message saying that an error was found and Windows needed to restart and fix it. All her PC would do after that was sit there with the little spinning wheel and would never restart or boot up. She restarted the PC numerous times but she is now getting some sort of FAT error message. Sorry I have not been able to reproduce this error to be able to repeat exactly what it says.

I put in a Windows 10 dvd that I created some time ago, and have used many times in order to "fix" start up issues and the like. When I put it in I keep getting an error message that says there is a missing media driver which could be a DVD, USB or Hard disk driver......I don't know why it is saying this, but it is reading from the disk, I'm not using a USB, and CHKDSK says all is fine. I can close this and get to UEFI screen which allows me to choose from 5 or 6 options. From System Restore, System Reset, Restore from System Image, Command Prompt, but the PC will not allow me to reset the PC, probably because 10 was not originally on the PC, but it will not allow me to restore or repair but instead gives me the error about the driver. While running SFC I got a message that errors were found but it could not fix them because the drive was write protected. Using DISKPART I was unable to change this for any and all volumes I found on the drive.

Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    :)

  2. Windows 10 Stumped Me.

Thank you for responding, but I need to clarify, I don't have a preview key I ha e the key to windows 7 pro. That until I upgraded worked fine.

Also when I reset my computer it wiped everything so windows 7 is no longer recoverable. I do not have my windows 7 disc and have tried to dl a win7 ISO but Microsoft is telling my product key no longer works.

I have no idea what to,, I built it myself so I can't rely on manufacturer support.

And in the future can you actually read the questions, your response doesn't seem to address any questions I have posted.

  3. Windows 10 Stumped Me.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

Some preview keys have been deactivated. To upgrade to the final release version of Windows 10, you will need to roll back to your original Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 activated copy and progress to the upgrade process.

We recommend using the Windows Update feature as this will help ensure your system is compatible, you will need to reserve your copy and when it is available you will be prompted to begin the installation process.

"Due to the high level of interest, your upgrade may not be available immediately…but rest assured your copy is reserved and is free"

See customer facing Windows 10 FAQ….section How Do I Upgrade My Existing Device?

"If you have a technical background or good at understanding computers you may also choose to create an ISO file to USB/DVD and install Windows 10 upgrade. see site
    Download Windows 10"

Additional information can be found at Windows 10 herunterladen

I would suggest you to refer to Andre Da Costa post from the below link:

Clean install Window 10 free upgrade?

Hope this information helps and let us know if you have any further queries related to Windows we will be glad to help you further.

    Thanks.

How old is the DVD your using if it's pre anniversary update and the PC has been updated it may not work as the update in effect was a new version of Windows

    Thanks for the reply.

It's pre-anniversary. I had not thought about that. One thing though...one of the options was to return to previous build...which would not work either.

Just double checked what I have...it is the 1607 version which if I am thinking correctly that is the Anniversary build is it not?

Win 10 issue has me stumped!

Hi, let's establish a few basic things:
    1. Do you actually know if the Windows on her PC is Win 10? Until we know what edition of Windows is on it, there's little one can do.
Ideas: (never had to try these...)
How to tell what version of Windows is installed on a hard drive without booting it - Quora
(You can do that when booted from Kyhi's disk -see below)
How do I tell what version and edition of Windows is on the filesystem? - Super User
    2. Is there any important information on her PC that is not backed up?
    3. Let's check the actual disk.
Download and boot from Kyhi's boot DVD/USB drive from the top of the Software and apps section.
This will boot a version of Windows with programs available- you can see what they are from where you get the disk.

Download and run Crystal Diskinfo (there's a portable version) -free- it will give a Good/Caution/Bad indication or use HDTune available when you boot from the disk

    I agree with Dalchina.
Download Kyhi's recovery media and boot the system to it.
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - - Windows 10 Forums
He has a program on there called HDTune which you can use to check the health of the hard drive.
If everything looks okay, you could try opening Macrium (also on there), and using the FixBoot option.

+1 to Kyhi's Recovery Tools, and the Macrium Reflect Utility to fix Windows boot problems.
