Windows 10: Win 10 Main

i remember when 8 was let out at preview stage i used it on my main pc. most said dont do it, i had no problems so i am about to do the same with '10'. i think its good enough*Party

Windows 10 - Network problems

I have just installed Windows 10 on my main PC. This is networked to (i) PC with Win 7 (ii) laptop with Win 8.1. An old HP1150 printer (parallel port) runs on the main PC. The other two have (had) access to this via the network. The other two now cannot
access the main PC PC. On the PC with Win 7, the main PC is shown under networks in File Explorer BUT access is denied although the main PC is set to share files. On the laptop, the main PC doesn't show at all under Network. So Win 10 has changed something.
PLEASE any help - but keep it simple - I am not very technical on these things. Many thanks whoever can help.....

 

Homegroups

I have a main pc (now on win 10 from win 8), a laptop (now win 10 from win 8.1) and a laptop (win 7 pro) all on an existing homegroup for the past 2 years. Since the windows 10 upgrades this week the homegroup will not work (allow printers to be shared).

I have finally deleted the homegroup on the main pc and win 10 laptop. Restarted and established a new homegroup on the main pc (and given printers new share names).

On the win 10 laptop it accepts the new homegroup name but not the password - and on various screens show "no homegroup on this pc - ready to create" etc but nothing about joining the existing named homegroup.

I have tried all variation of options (including those in the posts on here) but it just wont allow the laptops to connect using the new homegroup name/password combination on the main pc.

This is really annoying, and obviously a windows 10 bug - which hasn't been acknowledged or rectified

 

I would advise creating a backup of your current system and all data before going ahead. It just might save you a big headache if things don't go like you planned.

 

I did the same after doing system image and data backups. No major issues so far, just little things here and there like icons taking forever to populate, and Properties dialog not showing up until like 2 minutes after I click it.

It's remarkably stable, especially for day 1 (running as main OS on desktop). Good luck *Biggrin

 

They said the same with 7 and 8 testing versions and I have used them as main OS for years, it was just an updated previous OS, just like 10 is only an updated 8.1, drivers and software mostly work, but sudden re-install can be expected, when something goes wrong, that is all to it.

 

I'm sure Vista's testing stage was horrific tho, considering that it was beary different from XP and XP drivers didn't work.

 

Indeed, no wonder people were considering Vista bad OS, nothing worked, I hated it at first too.

 

Even at release it was a nitemare. It was more resource intensive then XP (at launch, it was better by SP2), and it took a while for Nvidia/ATI to reach performance parity with XP in their drivers since Vista was so different. Plus some older devices never got Vista drivers (if manufactor stopped updating). MS obviously learned because they haven't done anything as radical as XP>Vista since then.


MS probably should've done a stopgap between XP>Vista at the time, but w/e Windows 7 saved us *Smile

 

I have done a test on my old laptop with the preview before I decided to do it on the live. The only thing that doesn't work for me is MediaPortal (but then again I don't think Media Portal worked in the Windows 8 Developer Preview anyway) - but luckly for me everything else works (files, programs that I use) and an alternative DVB Software "DVBViewer" works.

I would not have installed this on my main machine if there was any other hiccups with software compatibilities. One thing doesn't work and that's okay, at least I have a backup if I need
