Win 10 upgrade from Retail Win 7 New PC

    Hi

I currently have Win 10 from the free upgrade from a retail version of Win 7.

I have a new (used) PC that already has Win 7 installed by the previous owner.

I'd like to install Win 10 on this machine.

Do I have to install my retail Win 7 as a clean install (as I have the DVD) then upgrade?
If so where do I get the Win 10 upgrade from now it is no longer free?

    Thanks

    :)

  2. What if I have more then one Win7/8/8.1 key - but only one computer. Can I still upgrade the rest of my keys?

    Hello Andre,

    Very informative, thanks.

In my case, I have a single PC with two removable SSD's.

One SSD has Win 7 Pro (OEM) installed, and the other has Win 8.1 Pro (Retail).

I insert the appropriate SSD and boot to the OS required at the time.

    From your answer above, I believe I can do the following legally;

    a. Upgrade Win 8.1 Pro (Retail) to Win 10 Pro (Retail) using the free upgrade offer

    b. Uninstall Win 10 Pro (Retail) and set the license aside for transfer to another PC (ie For use on a future build after the free upgrade offer expires)

    c. Upgrade Win 7 OEM to Win 10 using the free upgrade offer, and use this on my current PC

Can you confirm that this is possible and legal without any problems?

    Thanks

Transfer upgraded WIN10 Pro license to new PC

I upgraded my WIN7 PRO Retail License to WIN10 PRO during the free upgrade window following the launch of WIN10.

This answer from MIcrosoft indicates that I may transfer this license to an new PC (new HW without OS):

Upgrade to Win 10 from Win 7 retail - still retail?

Can anyone tell me how to proceed to be sure this will work?

    Thanks,

    Eirik D.

Welcome to the forum. You can just do a clean install of 10 but you will have to buy it

So even though my current PC has win10 I cant dis-associate it and move the license to the new PC?

The current PC will be scrapped so I cant see why the license cant be moved.

If the existing Windows 7 on the new PC is fully and legitimately activated, have you tried just doing the upgrade to Windows 10? You might be pleasantly surprised. Back up the Windows 7 installation first using an imaging program like Macrium Reflect if you have an external storage location large enough to hold it.
