Windows 10: Win 11/64 cannot access USB DVD drive

I have a Asus external dvd drive that I cannot access from windows 11:No drive letter is assignedDevice manager shows the DVD, and the "General" properties states the status is "This Device is working Properly"Driver version is 10.0.22621.1, dated 2006-06-21Tried adding the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi" subkey. The computer would not boot while the DVD player was attached.Odd, I read all about outdated drivers, however the only driver I've found was from 2006.I have an MSI PRO660BM-A motherboard with the latest BIOS.Any Thoughts would be appreciatedThanksJohn

Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10

Use Option Two in Brinks tutorial and in step #6 choose DVD instead of USB.

 

How in WIN 11 do I change the drive letter of the CD/ROM drive?

So this is what worked, step by step.

Reboot

Drive is listed as E: in file explorer.

Drive not listed in Disk Management.

Insert DVD, it plays after short pause.

Disk management now shows Audio CD as E:

Right click, change letter to R: (while playing!)

Reboot.

Drive now shows as BD-RE drive as R: in File Explorer.

The bottom line is

- File Explorer does not provide for changing drive letter afics.

- Disk Management seems to need a disk to be in the drive for it to "see" the drive. I can't recall is this is Win 10 behaviour

I don't recall having any difficulty with this in Win 10 (its possible that the Win 10 default drive allocation was "after" my external drives; or I "just changed it").

Something is flacky:

• My Dell Inspiron 3650 WIN 10 Pro 64 bit v1803.
• Drive says no disc when commercial DVD inserted.
• Drive is fine with my recorded DVD
• After -- Not before -- putting in Commercial DVD, then starting VLC, VLC finds the DVD and plays.
• Any other sequence does not work!
