Win 8 Home OEM to 10 Pro.. via 7 Pro OEM disk?

I've ordered a refurbished Asus laptop that has Win 8 Home preinstalled. I want to upgrade to Win 10 Pro. What'd be the ideal/doable path to do that, considering... I have Win 7 Pro OEM disc.. I don't have any Win 10 discs.

Can I download and do clean install Win 10 Pro from USB.. 'showing' my Win 7 Pro key along the way?
Or do I need to downgrade.. do clean install Win 7 Pro and then go with the online/10 upgrade from there?

I haven't received it yet but I'm assuming there's a D recovery partition.. should I preserve that or is it just not necessary? I'm thinking if I transferred ownership of the laptop later, I might want to disassociate my Win 7 key to that install.. restoring 8 home, upgrade it to 10 home.

Or do I even need to worry anymore about 'one 7 disk to one machine' when it's in path to 10?

I appreciate the help and recommendations.

    :)

  2. Windows 10 and 7 Pro OEM activation

    Hi,

From what I understand the Win 10 Pro OEM key can be used to activate Win 7 Pro OEM. Bascially I have a request to build a PC with Win 7 Pro, as this is need for the software used by the business. I have run out of copies
    of Win 7 Pro OEM.

I've tried using a Win 10 Pro OEM key for a Win 7 Pro OEM activation, but it's not working, tells me the key is not valid. Am I suppose to install Win 10 pro OEM, activate it, and then install Win 7 pro OEM, and activate
with the same key. I'm still getting orders for PCs with Win 7 Pro, and finally run out of copies.

What is the correct procedure to activate an Win 7 Pro OEM install with a Win 10 Pro OEM key?

    Thanks

  3. about the upgrade to windows 10

If you win 8.1 is OEM (pre-installed) you will get win 10 (OEM) for the same version your win 8 is (HOME, pRO, ETC)

Win 8 Home OEM to 10 Pro.. via 7 Pro OEM disk?

Has your oem 7 pro disc ever been used before ? OEM are not supposed to be transferable but I have see in some rare cases it still can ( luck on the side ) if not ? Then that would be the way to go about it . You would install 7 and upgrade to 10 . Afterwards you would check to see if you're activated, once it is, then and only then can you perform a clean installation of 10. Also, once windows 10 gets installed and is activated it wouldn't matter what windows you install on it because Microsoft keeps a record of your computer/laptop ID for windows 10 . So who ever get this laptop they can always install windows 10 pro over again, up to the life of the laptop or motherboard change. I also would keep the recovery partition of 8 unless you don't ever care to use 8 again

I would make an image of the factory 8.1. Assuming this is a brand new, unused Windows 7, install that to a second partition you will have to make. Make sure it is activated. Upgrade that to Windows 10 pro.

Wipe the whole thing (or save only the recovery partition if you want), and clean install Windows 10.

    Thanks for your reply..
I have a few 7 pro oem disks I purchased years ago and have used on machines that were upgraded/reinstalled etc several times.. I believe I've installed on 'new' machine after hardware upgrade, had to call once, maybe twice, but was activated.
Anyway, I never used one key on more than one machine at a time and never had an issue activating on 'new' hardware.. even different motherboard. Could activation been successful because I'm still the original registrant?

Like I said OEM are not supposed to be transferable but if you can make it happen, knock on wood . If you go for it just make sure your 7 gets activated and then do the upgrade to 10 . Once that is done check to see if it gets activated, if it does ? then you can decide to perform a clean installment of windows 10 pro and you can download a copy of windows 10 from the link below . Again, it's up to you if you want to keep the windows 8 recovery partition . I would only if you ever plan to resell the laptop and the person doesn't like 10 but he/she is ok with 8 .

What NavyLCDR mention with towards making a image of Windows 8.1 is a good idea to . Use a third party backup software like macrium reflect free

    Code: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10[/quote] Code: Macrium Software | 404

Win 8 Home OEM to 10 Pro.. via 7 Pro OEM disk?

I got a used Notebook with Win8 OEM installed and went to the store to get the free Update to 8.1 then I was able to get the free Win10 Upgrade. All versions were the Home. I did rebuild a Win7 Enterprise to Win7 Home w/SP1 without issue but did need the Product Key to match the Home version, only way to get the free Win10. The Win7 Ent came out of a business but I wouldn't have been able to work with as I didn't know what business it was, just was classed as a BuyBack.

He can do the update to windows 8.1 to but he wants the pro version not the home version. Only way to get the pro version is with a windows 7/8.1 pro install or buy a windows 10 pro copy

  11. Registration, if you mean in Microsoft's use of the term, has nothing to do with activation. You register as a user. You activate software. The two pieces of information are not asscociated by Microsoft. Don't confuse "registration" with "activation."
