Win TP wants to be first in boot order

I downloaded the new 9860 Win TP today and noticed a few interesting boot problems.

I am using 3 separate SSD's: One with Win 7 HP 64 bit, the second with Win 8.1 Pro and the 3rd with Win 10 TP.

I am using a Asus Maximus V Gene mob and the legacy BIOS option. In the BIOS hdd order options I have to put the SSD with Win 10 TP in the 1st position. If I re-arrange the hdd boot order I get a black text screen and an error message that the "digital signature is missing." This is a new one for me. If I use F8 and choose an SSD other than Win 10 TP that OS will boot. I have experimented with "Fast Boot" in the BIOS and it doesn't seem to have any affect. Each OS has its own SSD with a "Sys" partition, OS partition, and a over provisioning unallocated partition.

On a separate note, I do like the improvements in Win 10 TP and expect it will become my OS of choice when it is released next spring.

Any thoughts on the boot mystery will be appreciated.

    :)

  2. Why is my TP beta test now...> WIN 10 PRO, Activated ?

    Hi,

I have a Dual boot set-up for this TP beta test:

Partition#1 Windows 7 Home Premium OEM [I build my own computers]

    Partition #2 TP beta test.

Microsoft Upgraded my TP to > WIN 10 PRO, Activated. It seems like the Full Win10 OS.

On Partition #1 My Win 7 Home Premium is still registered for the Upgrade to Win 10.

  3. Dual Boot Elimination

    Hi,

I have a dual boot setup at this time, Partition #1 WIN 7 PRO, Partition #2 WIN 10 PRO "Activated" this was my TP beta partition, it was upgraded by MS. Is this WIN 10 PRO the same OS that I am being offered on partition #1 to replace WIN 7 PRO?

Now that the TP has ended I would like to do a WIN 10 PRO clean install and remove one of the Partitions to eliminate the Dual boot system. Should I do the upgrade to WIN 7 PRO then delete Partition #2 with the already activated WIN 10 PRO or could this
be a problem in the making ?

    Thank You for the Help...Jim

Win TP wants to be first in boot order

I'm having a whole bunch of strange boot problems.
    I was running W8.1 on an SSD, WTP on an HDD, and WTP 9841 on another HDD;
I went over to the WTP 9841 and it forced an update, then every entry in the boot loader was gone.
I repaired boot files and the loader with EasyBCD but it is totally different than boot in msconfig.
So now I have three editions of WTP 9860 running on three different drives, W8.1 is totally gone!?
    I'm definitely puzzled.

Who told you it would be released in the spring, the next edition will be the consumer preview.

I read this on this forum. I am talking about the RTM edition not the Consumer Preview.I believe it was something that Brink wrote about in one of his postings. Also Win TP is good until 4/15/15.
    Regards!

When you re-arrange the hdd boot did you also re-assign the default OS on msconfig boot tab?

Yes, however, I use Easy BCD Edit to do this. I assign Win 7 as my default OS.

Since you have multiple hard drives, perhaps a picture of your Disk Management window would be helpful...

To be honest, I recently just used boot selector menu (tried both Macrium and EasyBCD) to switch between OSes on different SSDs but the constant updates and changes to 10 just breaks everything. I just went back to selecting the SSD to boot from. Easy. No mess. No complications.

I had the same problem. When updating to build 9860 I did not think to disconnect all other hard drives, as I did while installing Win10. The update messed up everything, I could not boot to my main OS (Win7) until I physically disconnected the SSD with Win10. Then it turned out, that the update made Win10 the default OS even in the Win7 bootloader!

Thanks for pointing that out! Honestly, I don't know. I'm sure that before the update it was not there as I installed Win10 while all other hard drives were physically disconnected. Later today I plan to reinstall 10 this way and then update to build 9860. This will solve a number of other issues, one of which is the necessity to perform disk check when switching from 10 to 7.

That I did. There was no mention of Win7! That's what I meant when I said I could not even boot to Win 7 without unplugging the SSD with Win10. I guess the combination of installing Win10 on the single drive and the upgrading to build 9860 with all other drives plugged in should have been avoided.
