Windows 10: Win XP Dual Boot with Win 10

Im not sure which would be the best way to do this, Google is good most of the time but I am getting nowhere apart from getting more stress and a headache.

I have Win XP with SP2 already loaded and set up just right on a sata drive, Ive bought a new motherboard, cpu and ram and solid state drive (Ive never used ssd). Could I use an existing win10 backup and redeploy this with new mmb drivers on new ssd. I plan to use a couple of SATA drives for backup and additional storage on new PC or would it be better to start fresh with both. Can someone Please point me in the right direction

Will upgrading to Win 10 from Win7 cause me to lose XP Partition?

I have a Dual Boot configuration. Windows XP on one partition and Windows 7 on another partition on the same Hard Drive. I want to upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10, but leave Win XP (The Main Operating System from which I had installed Win 7). I want to be able
to select between Win XP and Win 10 in Boot Manager on boot up.
(currently it is Win XP and Win 7).

Will upgrading to Win 10 from Win7 cause me to lose Win XP Partition?

I have an Intel Pentium Dual Core Desktop PC. Please help.

I have a desktop with dual boot windows xp sp3/ win 7 sp1. I have some older software (only used a few times a year) that will not run on win7 so I have the xp partition. Will the new windows 10 upgrade allow the install to have xp/win 10 dual boot.

 

Welcome to the forum the win10 backup won't work the drivers will all be wrong and it won't activate as it's a new system so you need to buy a new copy of Windows and do a clean install

 

Thanks for the reply, A new copy of windows? I did not think it would have come to this. When I said backup I meant redeploy the backup with new drivers. I dont think its fair or right to pay MS again for something ive already paid for, to say Im slightly annoyed is an understatement.

 

Samuria is mistaken.

First, Windows 10 is the most tolerant OS to date of being moved to a new computer. I've done it twice now. The latest was when my step-daughters laptop failed and needed to be sent in for repair. I made an image backup of her laptop to an SSD. Installed that SSD in a spare laptop - completely different make and model, you get a screen at the first bootup that says installing new devices and it just moves on from there. When she got her original laptop back from the manufacturer, I moved the SSD from the spare laptop back to hers.

Also, when I upgraded my desktop, I gave my old desktop to my father in law and moved the HDD from his original computer to my old computer with no issues. The only problem you will have is if you are moving between a legacy BIOS computer to/from a UEFI computer, or moving between IDE SATA to/from AHCI SATA disk controller setting.

Second, Microsoft has provided a way to move the license for Windows 10 to a new computer and activate Windows:

Thanks for the reply, this looks more promising I have just went to put together new PC, I cant believe that Asus have not included a pin headder diagram for front panel connectors! The manual says use Q code, this may be ok for those who have these apps on their phones. I give up for today and will go back to this next week.

You are correct, the manual does leave some things to be desired. Here you go:

If you didn't by that MB yet, it's not very suitable for FX 8350, it has low power section (VRM), 4+1 and no cooler on it. The chipset on it is also very old and barely good enough for 8350. I wouldn't settle for anything less than with at least 970 chipset.

The last time I had a try at building a PC, XP had just come out.

I bought the memory, cpu and mb just before xmas 2016 Im not clued up with what to buy, which motherboard would you recommend?

Would there be any benefits buying a cpu & ram,(no idea which) for this Asus to replace. My old pc which has a Intel Q6600 Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L (rev. 2.4 4gb ram or am i better just forgetting about this new mb?

I'm very happy with my GA-990XA-UD3 motherboard, good overclocker and has VRM for at least 140 Watts which is more than standard 125W 8350.
M5A97_R20 as a minimum or M5A99FX_PRO_R20 as better option.
