  1. Win10 Error: User lockout condition after an @outlook.com Live account password is validly...

    Lost a day with this so thought I would write it up. Seems easy to recreate but I won't be doing this again. I don't work with virtual machines, I try to keep my friend's old laptop's running and this SSD drive upgrade and his forgotten password got me stuck and I believe it to be an error that needs to be fixed. I imaged his drive so just lost 9 hours work in reality as I updated to 1809 and had to that again after getting locked out.

    How to recreate a user password lockout situation in windows 10 v1803 using a Live account and PC.

    -Use a single admin account, microsoft live account, *** Email address is removed for privacy ***.

    -Use a PIN and a fingerprint to access windows

    ****-Forget Live Account password****

    Optional Steps showing password not working in safe mode after change

    ------------------------------------

    -msconfig - Safe Mode boot

    -After restart, safe mode asks for Password (not PIN and password is unknown)

    -Very difficult to exit safe mode. (continues looping on restart per msconfig settings)

    -You can not access the command prompt in troubleshooting without the password

    -Reset Password online (see below)

    -Online instructions show that resetting the @outlook.com password will allow login with safe mode with networking, but it DOES NOT. It still requires the forgotten password

    To exit safe mode

    -You must use Windows external media installer and boot to run troubleshooter and get to a command prompt

    -then you must use bcdedit to remove the Safemode entry (exact syntaxt can be googled)

    -It will then boot back to regular windows login, which you can now use the PIN code to enter , whew that was close to a lockout but we escaped by googling Microsoft forums and as yet unknown to me BCDEdit command

    -At this point all would have been well if I knew about the "Verify Identity" Link in the security settings and entered the new password, but did not.

    END Optional Steps

    --------------------------------------

    -Perform the steps in "Forgot Password" on login screen to reset the @outlook.com password, Microsoft instructions show to reset password online, get email code to backup email and reset password.

    -Perform password reset as above

    ****Important, Log back into windows with a PIN (not the new password that was reset), everything loads as normal.

    -Onedrive requests the new password to sync files and is entered

    ****User does not know about "Verify Identify" in the security settings, no pop-up is shown***

    -User DOES NOT "Verify Identity" in security settings

    -User restarts the PC

    -This time, it no longer allows a PIN, but requires a password, but not the new password, it requires the old password, which has been forgotten. Being connected to network made no difference, no difference in safe mode or normal boot.

    ------------------------------------------

    User is now locked out of PC.

    ------------------------------------------

    -Steps taken to resolve were to run external Windows 10 media and run troubleshooter to get command prompt and tried to add a new admin account through command prompt (didn't work as you can't login to a new admin account that has never been used, no way to change user login as there was always just 1 user until now added by CMD line. Some people had success with using runas to synch up passwords and force it to use the new password, but when I was in the troubleshooting CMD prompt, runas did not show as a valid command even in system32 directory. May work after you are logged into windows, but not in the troubleshooting CMD prompt.

    -To resolve, we had to re image drive back in time and spend nearly an entire day recreating and were able to finally get in with the PIN and "Verify Identity" in security settings to force new password use.

    I was never able to find a way around the user lockout issue described above even though we validly change the @outlook.com password but machine still wanted old forgotten password.

    :)

  2. Window 10 Auto-Logon (Hotmail/MS Account)

    1. run netplwiz
    2. select the user in the box you want to autologin to
    3. uncheck the box "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer"
    4. click Apply
    5. a box will pop up asking the user account and password you want to autologin to. Fill it out. If there is no password, leave the password field blank.
    6. click OK
    7. click OK

    restart to test

    Win10 copies the Live/Outlook/Hotmail account locally.

    He wants to configure a outlook account with 1 email, with that outlook account he wants to run the same account in 2 diferent computers he wants the both computer to be connected in network, for example:

    • he receives a email and that email is sent to each computer;
    • he deletes a email from one computer and it also deletes on the other;
    • he moves a email to a folder it also moves on the other computer;

    Interactive logon: Machine account lockout threshold?

    Machine Lockout refers to the password of the Local User Accounts - not BitLocker
