Windows 10: win10 recent update caused black screen with cursor but no icons or start menu.

I can do safe mode and command prompt. After troubleshooting awhile it just goes straight into repair mode but offers nothing that works.

No rollbacks work.

Ran chkdsk but couldn't transfer the log to view.

Ran sfc scannow but stopped with error of can't perform requested operation, blahblah.

Restore blows up.


I want to re-download windows 10 and get new files, but keep my data--wherever it is. I have created the usb bootable drive and can get into X: in safe mode. But now what? lol

Black screen with cursor on screen after few days from upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7.

Original Title: Issue with black screen with cursor after win7 upgraded to win10

Post upgrade from win7 to win10 it worked fine for few days but recently I am facing a problem with black screen appearing after entering the password, only cursor is visible. I did below steps suggested on Internet

1. hit ctrl+Alt+del

2. start a new task from task manager

3. Hit explorer.exe

However this fails saying a feature for windows 10 need to be installed call NTVDM. It tries to install and fails with error . Can somebody suggest me a solution to this?

 

Start Menu Recent files


It doesn't work off the start menu in win10, I posted the same a few weeks ago.

Oddly, if the programs appear in most recent used, then you do get the recent files list. Or if you pin to the task bar, you also get the recent list if you right click the icon.

Microsoft's proper name for these recent files is jump list.

Some has shown a beta of a later win10, and the jump list might return if pinned to the start menu. Doubly annoying is if you pin a program to the start menu, it's removed from most used.
