  1. Win10 Storage Spaces - Mirrored Pool Doesn't Release Space

Using Storage Spaces for a simple Mirrored Pool with (2) 4TB HDD's for a backup drive.

Setup was simple and easy with Storage Spaces reporting a formatted 3.75TB Mirrored Volume.

After test writing some system images and doing some disk speeds tests, Storage Spaces says drives are over 80% full with a warning, but there isn't any kept data on there.

Under Computer Management, the Volume says only 15% used.

So it's like deleted files (also deleted from recycle bin) don't get reported as free space back to the Storage Space Console.

I have also created a SIMPLE storage space with (2) SSD's, but deleted files and space seems to be reclaimed there.

I have enabled Disk Optimizer to run once a week but it doesn't help to reclaim the space on the MIRRORED volume of HDD's.

    :)

    Storage Spaces Mirror 2 Drives?

Actually... no. If you plug out a mirror from a Storage Spaces mirror and plug into another Windows 10 machine, it will first warn you that a Storage Space is in trouble, but seconds later your plugged mirror is fully available. I just tried.
Interesting enough, you can keep working and modifying your now "reduced resiliency" space. When you plug the missing drive back to your real Storage Spaces machine it gets in sync and back to normal.

I came here looking for some more experienced users having tried this before, but I see that it's a bit crazy and no one has tried it. So far, I'm starting to believe this is a great way to have an always updated roaming media storage.
I wonder what would happen if the roaming media gets modified, it would be overwritten once back in the mirror?

  3. Windows 10 storage spaces

I set up a storage space with two drives, mutually mirrored, then recently added another pair. The storage spaces manager shows the extra capacity but the pool still appears at the original size. How do I set up the new drives as additional mirrored space,
or must it form a new pool to avoid deleting the currently stored data?

I suppose I could back up all the data then set the pool up from scratch as a four-drive mirrored pool, but how?

Storage Spaces - Is there a calculator ?

    Ben,

I realise this hasn't been answered in a few months, but I thought I'd fill this in other users of Storage Spaces. Basically people tend to think about Storage Space like a traditional RAID type set up. It doesn't quite work that way. Storage Space provide
data resiliency from data corruption such as bit rot and device failure. You stated that you wanted to pool 3 drives which total 10TB of space. For a 3 drive set up you only have 2 options, a 2-way mirror space and a parity space or both. A 2-way mirror consumes
space using a factor of 2 so the 10TB / 2 = 5TB of usable space. A parity space consumes space using a factor of 1.5, so the 10TB / 1.5 = 6.66TB of space. Storage spaces is very flexible and adding an additional drive to the pool would move your current data
around to make the most use of the additional space that you added. The reason you are seeing a small figure for your parity space is because your 3rd volume is only 2TB in size so it can only yield 3.63TB of space used. If you want to overcome this hurdle
you could create 2 spaces on a single pool, a mirror and a parity. Let me know if this answers your original question. Thanks.
