Windows 10: Win10 tries to install update to my neighbor's printer

Hi All!
When I look at update history I see *my* computer is failing an update to my neighbor's wi-fi printer. I can "see" his printer, but don't have authority to use it.

Error: HP driver update for HP LaserJet Professional CP1520 Series PCL 6 - Error 0x80240017

I'm thinking I need to block updates to that printer on *my* system.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to handle this. Minor issue, but "Grrrr".

Last update totally failed and messed up computer

• Did you mean that the laptop is now working without the latest update installed? If yes, have you tried installing the latest update again?

Upgraded to Win 10 and now printer not recognized (Device Descriptor Request Failed; Code 43)

Oh for crying out loud. On a whim and out of desperation I unplugged my printer from the dedicated usb port in my computer that it's monopolized for the last 2-3 years, and then plugged it into the neighboring usb port. Voila. It came up in Devices and
Printers almost instantly, and I was able to print a test page, no problems. I hadn't rebooted my computer and done anything else to it since last night other than reply to the forum thread, above.

Just tried plugging the printer back into the original usb port, and again the device error problem, unidentified usb device. Plugged it into the neighboring port, and it works again.

How on earth did updating to Win 10 cause my printer to no longer be recognized on one usb port but fine on another????

Why are you seeing his printer on your network?

 

Do you mean that you can "see" the printer on the network list?



This might help - not sure if you'll find an unknown device though
Open Device Manager,
Scroll down to Other devices
Uninstall unknown device - answer yes to remove software.

restart the machine
try WU

 

Update: It's not my neighbor's printer.
FYI: I did discover many folks on Windows 10 are getting the same failed update:

On Windows 7 I would just hide that update, now I can't do that.
FWIW: I will mark this as solved and ignore it for the time being.

Win10 does allow hiding updates ... but you need a separate troubleshooting diag cab.

A great deal to read and understand here. *Huh Originally I wanted only to remove the notification of one failed update from my Update & Security screen. I've always closely watched new update (Win XP & 7); now to decide if I want to continue that practice or just leave it up to Win10.
For now, I'm going to watch an wait and I thank you to pointing me to all the options when I'm ready to make a move on this issue.

JD did you ever have a printer like that connected to your computer? I know my brother has said that he has seen the same driver for his old printer (which is not currently attached, and it won't be again) trying to download over and over, and failing every time. That was a couple of months ago, so I don't know if he ever resolved it. He might have found out about the hide updates deal, same as what Slarty posted above.

No. I only use Acrobat Pro and other .pdf printers.
But it is an interesting question. I had a glitch upgrading to Win 10 and gave my computer to my IT buddy who changed some settings and ran the update in his environment. He likely has a wi-fi printer. I'll check with him to see if that might be where my computer picked it up.

JDU, yeah that's a pretty good possibility.

I actually talked to my brother about 10 mins ago about something unrelated, and asked him about his issue. He's still having it. After he gets off work he's going to try the hidden update deal prior to downloading the May patches, to see if it works.
