  1. Win10 upgrade problem vs. graphics card

About two years ago I built a Win10 computer, using an Asus M5A78L-MLE MB (I usually use ASRock MB). To my dismay, the on-board graphics weren't working. I remembered I had an old (8-9 years?) XFX GeFORCE graphics card and I plugged it in and all seemed well.

Now suddenly I'm having a problem with a Win10 upgrade. For the past 5-6 days it's been downloading, installing, and then "attempting to reinstall previous version". I'm assuming the same upgrade is downloading over and over. And I'm really chewing up my Verizon data allotment. Could it be the graphics card?? I conclude I either have to rebuild completely, or buy a relatively low-end graphics card as an inexpensive experiment. Anyone have any ideas? The Update History doesn't show any failed upgrades over the past few days, which really puzzles me. Many thanks, David

    :)

  5. zbook, thanks for the reminder to edit and update my system specs.... did that. I downloaded the log collector, and ran it, but don't really see how to get to it. I'll look into it. David

On this link are the main DM log collector and on the bottom is the beta log collector. The beta version is preferred if you can post a zip into the thread for troubleshooting. Depending on the computer environment one should place a folder on the desktop. Then zip it and post it into this thread.

Sometimes this commands fix problems and sometimes windows defender settings may need to be modified.
    1) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    2) sfc /scannow
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    4) chkdsk /scan
    5) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

  7. I did install a new Asus PCI-Express graphics card, hoping to match up with the Asus motherboard. And this appears to have solved the update problem. The update that has been downloading over and over (!) downloaded again, but this time it appears to have installed properly. I should never have used an 'old' graphics card! David

I think the Upgrade Adviser would have said something about the graphics card.

Next time you want to upgrade W10, just download the Iso file and run it from within windows, that way you don`t have to keep doing the download.

    Change your specs *Wink
