Windows 10: Win11 waking computer from hibernate - how, why?

Sitting this morning enjoying my coffee and I hear the familiar whir, whiz of my desktop waking up from hibernate. It's been in hibernate mode since 7pm last night. No-one's home except me so it couldn't be an inadvertent bump or something of the like. Besides, hibernate requires the power button to be pressed, not just a bump of the mouse or something similar. This is the 2nd, maybe 3rd it's happened for seemingly no reason. I immediately went to the computer and nothing was running updates, etc and I'm not aware of anything scheduled that would start it up.I did a Google search and I see t

S4 (hibernation) USB/network wake up

Hi,

I have this annoying problem. When my computer enters the S4 powerstate (hibernation) I can wake it up by just clicking with the mouse. Even when EuP is enabled the mouse can still wake up the computer. After a night of sleep I find the computer powered on. So not only can the mouse wake up the system, it also seems that network traffic can too.

I thought that hibernation was like power off but with the option to save the RAM to disk. At least before I always need to push the power button to boot after hibernation.

Any suggestions?

Windows 10 randomly waking from hibernation

I understand your concern and will assist you to resolve the issue.

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps.

Step 1: Stop the Network from Waking Your PC

a. Press Windows key + X and select
Device Manager.

b. In Device Manager, under
Network Adapter, Right click and select properties.

c. Go to the Power Management tab. uncheck the box that says: "allow computer to turn off this device to save power".

d. you'll find an “Allow this device to wake the computer” check box, which you should uncheck.

Step2: Run the
Power troubleshooter.

Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with power. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with your Power.

Refer these steps:

• Press Windows key +X, select Control panel.
• Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons.
• Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel.
• Run the Power troubleshooter.

Apps doesn’t load when waking the computer from hibernation

We understand that after waking up the computer from Hibernation, the apps that were running doesn’t load, we will look into this for you. However, we would like to know the complete model of the Dell XPS laptop that you are using.



Meanwhile, you may refer the steps mentioned below:



Method 1: Disable Hybrid Sleep



You can try disabling Hybrid sleep and check if that helps in resolving the issue. Refer the steps mentioned below:

1. Press Windows key + R, to open
   Run dialog box.
   
2. Type control powercfg.cpl,,3 and click on OK.
   
3. Now, select the active power plan from the drop down.
   
4. Expand Sleep, and expand
   Allow hybrid sleep and select OFF.
   
5. Click on OK.
   

Method 2: Refresh hiberfile.sys



If disabling Hybrid Sleep didn’t fix the issue, you can try refreshing hiberfile.sys. The hiberfile.sys is responsible to store all the data when the computer is put to hibernation. Follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Type Command Prompt in the search bar on the
   Taskbar.
   
2. Right click on the Command Prompt icon and select
   Run as administrator.
   
3. Type powercfg –h off and hit
   Enter to disable Hibernation.
   
4. Once the command is executed type powercfg –h on and hit
   Enter to enable Hibernation.

Note: The Step 11 from the above article talks about
Operating System Re-Installation. Performing a re-installation will remove all the data and apps from the computer. Please take a backup of data before performing a re-installation.
