  1. (Win7,8,10) HOWTO: Printing to CUPS with basic authentication enabled

(Testing here shows that this answer should be applicable to at least: Windows 7, Windows 8.*, Windows 10)

Problem: You're on a Windows system and you need to print to a CUPS server that's using authenticated access for printing.

There's already a question about this, but the thread is locked, else I'd add it there:

The real answer is thankfully actually _MUCH_ easier than is given there!

    1. Locate the printer entry (printer XYZ on http://yourcupserver in "printers and faxes" )
    2. - right click and select printer properties
    3. - select the ports tab
    4. - the port being used should already be checked. Click on "configure port"
    5. - Select "use the specified user account", fill in the details and click OK.

    You're done!

NB: If your password on the system underlaying the CUPS server changes you'll have to do this again.

    Printing To CUPs with authentication

    Hi all,

For a while now, we've been 99% Mac based when it comes to clients, so we've always run OS X Server as it handled our needs. For Print serving, we use the built in CUPS Server system and Web Gui to manage it. At the end of last year, due to supply waste
concerns, we started requiring authentication for our Color Printers, and limiting them to a select few (BW printers do not require authentication). I was just informed that next week we have a few Windows 7 and 10 users starting, and that they'll need to
be able to print in color.

In the past, I've had no issues adding printers to Windows machines using ipp to connect to the CUPS printers, however, those were only our unauthenticated BW printers. When I attempt to add one of our authentication required printers to my demo PC,
I'm able to using the following URL type (http://IP-OF-SERVER:631/printers/COLORPRINTER) however, I'm not prompted for a user or password at any time
when attempting to print like I am on Mac clients. The print jobs just seem to vanish and go nowhere.

After a bit of googling, I've tried this URL TYPE: http://username(Win7,8,10) HOWTO: Printing to CUPS with basic authentication enabled :password@IP-OF-SERVER:631/printers/COLORPRINTER ; however,
Windows is unable to find that printer.

Anyone have any suggestions? Something I need to enable in CUPS for PCs?

    Thanks!

    Printing To CUPs with authentication

Unfortunately that link's only suggestion is try a new driver. The correct driver for the printer is installed, but the Windows PC needs to send authentication data to the ipp printer. Also, that printer troubleshooter program on that page doesn't actually
    run.

Do PCs simply require a windows print server rather then a unix or mac one?
