Windows 10: Win8.1-->10_Update will not install 10?

After fighting MS's insistence, now that I want to install 10 on my wife's 8.1 laptop (discussed in recent thread Thread: Need to significantly increase Dell Inspiron 7000 speed or donate? by ), the installer appears to be misbehaving.

Win10 is definitely on the machine. I copied the file to a USB several days ago in preparation to install the new SSD and OS after upgrading the current drive per forum.

I've gone through the update/download/install/boot/install routine at least 4 times. On each occasion

I've selected 'check for new updates', updates are found, I install, update says it's doing 10 but the machine boots up in 8.1?

Win8.1 Home upgrades to Win10 Home, Win8.1 Pro upgrades to Win10 Pro, etc.

<EDIT> Once you've upgraded from Win8.1 Home to Win10 Home, you can then purchase an upgrade to Win10 Pro.

3. When (approx. date) did you do the clean install of Win7?

4. What anti-virus application or security suite was installed when you were running Win7? Had you subscription (if any) expired by the time you "upgraded" to Win8.1? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) were installed? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

5a. When (approx. date) did you upgrade the Win7 computer to Win8.1?

5b. What installation media did you use to upgrade the Win7 computer to Win8.1?

5c. Did you run the Win8.1 Upgrade Assistant as part of the upgrade?

6. Was Windows Defender working properly after you upgraded to Win8.1/before you upgraded to Win10?

The above very strongly suggests that you may be seeing the effects of an ongoing infection of some kind!

 

If you "copied the file to a USB several days ago", then why not just use that to do the upgrade to Windows 10 instead of Windows Update?

And which file did you copy to a USB?

Although I would have to do so when I remove the mechanical drive and install the SSD, I was looking to postpone that which I've never done for the first step of upgrading the existing 8.1 OS so as to preserve the key. I grudgingly now see that that makes little sense. I will proceed with the upgrade via USB and then clean install with USB.

Per Brink's tutorial, I will download the Media Creation Tool that I presume will alter the characteristics of my file, information residing on the USB or both to allow the USB to boot the machine and start the process?

2 more questions:

1. MS had a deadline to accept their push of Win10 and that deadline has passed, how is it one may download a copy of Win 10 now if they choose?

2 I not infrequently delete chunks of touch typed text by inadvertently hitting a key combo on this P50 keyboard. This forum board 'autosaves' periodically. If I were to do an accidental text delete after a save where about is the 'undue' icon?

 

1. True, the GWX/Get Windows 10 feature was discontinued at the 1-year mark. However, if your computer could have used that process it is still possible to get Win10 using the MCT/Microsoft Creation Tool. I've not had a problem as long as the computer I was Upgrading was running Win7 w/SP1 or Win8.1 in conjunction with a Microsoft Account and being online at the time. MCT has choices, can run directly from their site or download to an 8GB or larger USB Thumb drive [will reformat it and will be bootable] or get an .iso file to use in creating the DVD to boot and install from.

The entire process went like a breeze!

Her laptop is running a clean Win10 with apps installed.

Her mechanical drive is now external and will be used for Reflect auto images.

I will post a duplicate of this on the prior, related thread.
