Windows 10: Window 10 Pro ver. 1909 sees only Criterion branded DVD-ROM as DVD-R/W

Windows 10 Pro Ver. 1909 read specifically all Criterion brand DVD-ROMs as DVD-R/W. When the DVD-ROM is in drive, File Explorer sees drive, clicking opens a dialogue pane asking whether to use the disk as USB. Under normal operation the name of the movie on the disk appears after the drive letter and when clicked opens a file window with the contents of the disk. All other DVD-ROM disks work normally.

This behavior began after a updating to ver. 1909.


I have updated the drivers, none newer found. I have deleted the drive from device manager and rebooted. Twice. Same driver. Same problem.


I tried opening up the computer and re-seating the SATA cable both on the drive and on the motherboard. On the motherboard side I changed SATA ports. Rebooted and inserted a Criterion brand disk. Both of the disks were recognized. I watched one successfully. I powered of the PC.


Upon booting PC today, the same behavior described above is now the case.


The drive is a Plextor PX-880SA.

I don't think it is a physical problem. I think it is Windows. I think it's Windows since this started after an update or two. I came across something about MS adding copy ability for DVD-ROMs.

DVD R/W drive only reads data and music CDs and not DVDs

The DVD R/W drive is in a Dell XPS 8300 PC and this morning I ran Dell Support Assist.

The built in drive self test passed as well as the CD Rom test. Could not complete the DVD tests because it doesn't recognize that I inserted a DVD.

The DVD Player app only supports the following:

a. DVDs from a file backup is not supported, the app currently only plays DVD movies on optical discs.

b. The App will only play DVD's not Blu-ray discs.

If you satisfy both the categories, I would suggest you follow the steps below and see if it helps:

Update DVD/CD-ROM drives from Device Manager.

  Press Windows key + R key. Type "devmgmt.msc" and click Enter.
  
• 
  Expand the DVD/CD-ROM drives.
  
• 
  Double-click on the DVD/CD-ROM drive.
  
• 
  In Properties, go to Drivers Tab and click on Update.
  

If this does not work you might have to Uninstall and then reinstall your drivers in compatibility mode.

Follow the steps to uninstall and reinstall the driver.

• 
  Press Windows key + R key. Type "devmgmt.msc" and click Enter.
  
• 
  Expand the DVD/CD-ROM drives.
  
• 
  Double-click on the DVD/CD-ROM drive.
  
• 
  In Properties, go to Drivers Tab and click on Uninstall.
  
• 
  Reinstall your audio driver from Manufacturer's Website in Compatibility mode.
  
• 
  Restart your system

missing dvd rom?

i have just upgraded my mobo to a Abit p35 pro and when i start up the post screen shows (in green writing) both my IDE Plextor-800a DVD/RW + Plextor-116a DVD/ROM but when i open XP the only one that is detected is my RW drive? I have had a look in disk manager and changed the cable but nothing. The drives are set as DVD/RW-Master, DVD/Rom-Slave. Both drives were working perfectly well and i can open and close the Rom drive while in windows.

The only thing i can think of is a BIOS setting but not being that familiar with them i don't know where to find any of the options.

Any ideas or suggestions?
