    Window 10 Upgrade Headache

Here's how I got an old Radeon card to work in Windows 10. I can't lay claim to figuring this out. I found the info when Windows 10 first came out. I wish I remembered who provided it so I could give him credit.
Download AMD Catalyst 13.4 Legacy. http://support.amd.com/en-us/downloa...s%208%20-%2064
run the installer but close it after it unpacked all the installation files to C:\AMD.
    2: Open Device Manager.
3: Under Display adapters right click on the adapter used in your system and click Update Driver Software.
4: Click on the second option Browse my computer for driver software.
5: Click Let me pick from a list of device... in the next menu and Have Disk... on the following.
6: Click Browse on the pop-up menu and go to: C:\AMD\AMD_Catalyst_13.4_Legacy_Beta_Vista_Win7_Win8\Packages\Drivers\Display\W86A_INF.
7: Select the first .inf file - In my case this was: C7156445.inf - and click open.
8: Select the model from the list that corresponds to your hardware -
there were two of the same in my case so I just clicked the first - and click Next.
Afterwards the driver should install accompanied with several screen flickers. You may have to reboot.
    9. If all you want is the driver that's it. If you want to run CCC re-run the legacy driver installer from AMD and have it install the Catalyst Control Center.

Yes, I did sfc /scannow with no errors found.
I did NOT upgrade from 32 to 64 bit (ref post 9). The machine is question is 64-bit per my system spec. I successfully did a win10 upgrade on a 32 bit win7 machine as per my post #1. That worked out great but there weren’t many apps on that machine as there are on my specified i7-870 machine in question.
It seems that all of my problems could have been caused by permission/authentication issues from the feel of it. Lots of access denied errors when programs failed to launch and when I tried to copy files etc. I found suggestions that helped some people and had some success in getting icons back on my desktop but no useful progress for the effort. I kind of think if were a simple setting somewhere that MS would have patched it by now but can’t be sure, so…
I went ahead and made a win10 disk using the media creation tool and used it to do a clean install (‘keep nothing’ selected in menu) on the subject machine. It works fine but I haven’t loaded anything yet. Windows installed all drivers and all looks good in the device manager. I know I need to do the Catalyst install with the AMD driver but I was thinking of doing the same process as outlined in Post 15 but using Catalyst 13.9 which I was running on Win 7. Any reason to believe that process should not be applied using Catalyst 13.9? Without the catalyst I can’t scale my second monitor (small image now) so I need to get that done.
Also, is it a good idea to update the chipset drivers to intel drivers? How about the audio drivers? It’s an older 1st gen i7 processor but Intel might have win10 drivers for it, not sure right now. Presently, all the drivers were provided by MS and all looks good in the Device Manager.
Thanks for reading and for all of the suggestions.

I can't see why it wouldn't. The 13.4 version was the beta version that AMD quickly put out after Windows 10 was released to address some of the issues people were having with legacy hardware. After upgrading to 10 you could try going to the AMD support site and let their tool detect your graphics and OS and use whatever version they suggest using. It may very well point you to version 13.9. It also might keep you from using the workaround in post 15. If it doesn't work the way you want then you could always fall back to Plan B and use an older version of CCC and the driver. When using their tool I do not know if it will include a full blown CCC or not but it's worth checking.

I didn't know they had a tool. Sounds like a good idea though I have see on their site that they recommend using the very driver that Windows installs. In fact it seems that AMD wrote the driver that windows installs and provided it to MS as a 'courtesy'. Its not available on the AMD site, only via Windows update! Still though, it would be interesting to see what the tool comes back with as you suggest. I plan to try ver 13.9 per the process in post 15 when i get around to it. As you say, I could always fall back on ver 13.4.
Also, I thought ver 13.4 was the latest beta version for windows 8 on HD 4000 series graphics! Did you find that it included HD 4000 support on Windows 10??

Yes, I saw that! it's the only reference I've seen of someone using ver 13.9 which is why I was curious why 13.4 seems to the standard. Maybe just habit perhaps? I plan to use 13.9 and I'll let you know what happens. Since Ver 13.9 was made for Win7, I'll install in compatibility mode for 7.
Does anyone have any thoughts about other drivers (like the Intel P55 chip-set drivers for example) that were installed by Windows and provided by MS? Should these be updated if an Intel Driver is available? Windows installed drivers for everything and MS is listed as the provider in all cases except for the video driver we discussed. No yellow marks in the Device Manager so maybe I can just run as it is?

Sorry you don't like 10. If set up correctly it's a great OS. The trouble is Microsoft does not tell novice users exactly how. You have to dig that out for yourself and this forum is the best place to start. There are all kinds of tweaks one can do to make Windows 10 more usable for them. Out of the 40 or so machines I've upgraded only one user went back to Windows 7. If you upgraded within the last month you can go back to 7. Here's instructions http://www.howtogeek.com/220723/how-...dows-7-or-8.1/
If you upgraded over a month ago the only way to get back to 7 is a clean install.

The Microsoft drivers should be fine unless you are experiencing problems. Intel has their own tool for checking drivers for their hardware. Drivers & Software
Click on "automatically update your drivers" Be sure to make a restore point first.

Thanks for the help. The Intel Driver Update Utility scanned the computer and said “No Drivers were detected for your product.” My chipset is the “P55 Express Chipset.” The utility listed nothing under “Installed version” and “Latest version.” I take that to mean that it either did not find any Chipset Driver or it did not recognize what it found. I searched the Intel site for the P55 chipset and it looks like the latest driver does not support any OS past Windows 7. The Intel utility seems to confirm that.
I’m suspicious that there are either no drivers installed or there is a very rudimentary driver provided by Microsoft for the P55 chipset. Here is what the Device Manager showed for system devices under Windows 7:

    Window 10 Upgrade Headache [IMG]

Here is what is showed under Window 10

    Window 10 Upgrade Headache [IMG]

Several devices are missing from the Windows 10 installation such as those ending in four digits like 3B42, 3B44, and similar. In Windows 10 it looks like these may be replaced by “Legacy Device” but that shows “no driver is installed.” I’m not sure what all this means but I’m interested in knowing. I am noticing some performance anomalies but I’m not sure if they are related to the above or something else:
    • First it often happens that I’ll click on the top of a window to move it and it will stay still. Sometimes I have to retry this or wait a few seconds before the window will move. It happens often enough to be annoying.
    • Under Network Infrastructure the gateway shows up as below in Windows 7 and also on my other Windows 10 computer. On the computer in question the gateway has no icon, just a blank square!

    Window 10 Upgrade Headache [IMG]

Here’s what I’m interested in knowing:
    • Are my chipset drivers installed properly and are they working OK?
    • Are they responsible for the problems I described or is this due to some other bug yet to be worked out?
    • Am I correct that there are no better chip-set drivers than what MS provided since it doesn’t look like Intel has one for the P55 Chip-Set and Windows 10?
Thanks for reading and for any help!

    Hi Brother,

If I reformat the hard drive and use Win 7 disc, it would work.

Microsoft would let it go as Win 7 and they will not force me to go to Win 10.

That would be fine. A hard lesson learnt.

I have the H57 chipset. Here's what device manager looked like after I did a clean install of 10. These are Microsoft's drivers. I ran this way for quite some time.

    Window 10 Upgrade Headache [IMG]

I then decided to try the Windows 7 chipset driver dated 2009. Now this is what it looks like and it's working fine using that old driver. Windows 10 did not squack about using the old driver at all. It doesn't show in the screenshot but all those devices you refer to as ending in 4 digits are also there. I did not use compatibility mode to install it. .

Before you go to the trouble of a clean install go to the manufacturer web site and download the driver. If there is one for Windows 8/8.1 use it. If not use the Windows 7 one.

While messing with your drivers also verify that your display adapter and sound are not using the generic Microsoft drivers. Those are the ones that I have found to be missing after the upgrade. Good luck.

Very interesting! Intel has some recent Windows 7 driver but it never occurred to me to use that.
    • Did you notice any bugs that got fixed after going to the Intel chip set driver?
    • Do you think my mouse delay or icon issue might be caused by the MS chip set Driver?
The audio and display adapter are both MS now. I haven’t changed anything yet but can change both of those. BTW, I am working with a clean install of Ten now. I gave up on the upgrade per detail in post #16. Also, I’ve heard that Chip set drivers should be installed before other drivers or applications.
    • Is this true? Do you know why?
    Thanks for the help!

I think chipset is always installed first because certain other hardware depend on it in order to be detected correctly. I really did not notice any issues running Microsoft's drivers. I don't think your icon issue is related to the chipset at all. That's more on the software side. Mouse delay, maybe. There's no way of knowing for sure but I have seen chipset drivers cause some weird things. You did not state your make and model computer so I don't know graphics or sound controller you have. If you have Intel graphics you will see it change in device manager once you install the chipset driver as well as your IDE controller. To get full resolution the Microsoft display adapter driver will not work. In my case as in the above example I do not have Intel graphics. If your sound is Realtek they have recently released a Windows 10 driver. Go to the "drivers and hardware" section of this forum. You'll be much better off in the long run having done a clean install. I'm a firm believer in doing them over doing an upgrade. Once you get all the correct drivers may I suggest you backup all your drivers in case you ever have to go through this again. There are a number of programs that will do this but I use a simple, standalone program called Doubledriver .(run as administrator) You need backup only the non-Microsoft drivers. http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/deta...le_driver.html
