Can't type in Windows 10 Start or Search bar

    Dave ErismanApril 12, 2019 20:57

If you can't type in the Windows 10 start menu or Cortana search bar then it's possible a key service is disabled or an update has caused an issue.

Before proceeding below there are some prerequisites

    • Administrator rights required
    • Firewall enabled

There are two methods, the first method typically solves the issue.

Before proceeding try searching after firewall has been enabled. It's possible enabling the firewall will resolve the issue. If not proceed below.

    Method 1:

    • Press Windows + X keys on the keyboard, select Command prompt admin.

    • Enter the below commands one by one and hit Enter key.

      PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted

    • It will turn the command prompt into a PowerShell window.

    • Now cut and paste the following command below and hit Enter key.

      Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*SystemApps*"} Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$$_.InstallLocation\AppXManifest.xml"}

    • Reboot and the issues should be resolved

If the issue still persist, follow the below method.

    Method 2:

    • Open the Task manager. Here’s a tip: Press CTRL+Shift+ESC.
    • Click File > Run New Task
    • Make sure you have a check mark beside “Create this task with administrative privileges”
    • Type Powershell
    • Type the following in the Powershell prompt:
      $manifest = Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore.InstallLocation + '\AppxManifest.xml' ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest
    • Close the Powershell window
    • Reboot the computer and check if it helps

I have tried all steps but nothing please assist

    :)

  2. task mgr lost in windows 1o

    Hi Sheila,

I realize the inconvenience you are facing. Let me help you in resolving the issue.

I appreciate if you can provide us the following information to help us understand the issue better.

    • Did you make any changes in prior to this issue?
    • Do you get any error message or error code on the screen?

This issue may happen due to system file corruption. I suggest you to run System file checker. System File checker (SFC) scan is done to check if there are any corrupted system files that could be causing this issue. Kindly follow
    the below given steps:

    • Press Windows key + X, select
      Command prompt (Admin)
to bring up elevated Command prompt.
    • In Command prompt type sfc/scannow and press enter.
    • Restart the computer.
If no corrupted system files were found in the previous state, then I suggest you to try the following steps:

    • Open command prompt by pressing Windows key + X and selecting “Command prompt admin”.
    • In command prompt, type the following commands and press Enter after each command:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    • Close the command prompt and restart the PC and check if it works.

Keep us posted on Windows related queries and we will be happy to assist you further.
