Windows 10: Window size shrinking with each successive close and reopen of program

With some frequency but not all the time, I see a progressively shrinking window size each time when closing and reopening a program. The problems seems cured by a reboot. The problem may occur only with Outlook, but posting the problem in the community under Office has not brought forth a solid solution.


I have done a system file scan, and I have multiple times deleted BagMRU in the registry, which seems to take away the issue, until it reappears again. I have for some days tried to log what I do leading up to such an episode, but so far I have not been able to discern a reliable pattern or be able to create the problem at will. Simply resizing the window by dragging a corner, or doing it by a number of other familiar methods (e.g. Size command in a drop down in the top of the window) does not prevent the problem from recurring. I have tried several combinations of having a second window open along with Outlook, resizing one or the other of them, putting one or the other on top, etc, but no pattern emerges.

I have seen the problem appear without any registry change, after refreshing, in: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\LocalSettings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\ Bags or BagsMRU. These keys were previously provided by a Microsoft MVP, but I would be glad to look at other registry entries that might be relevant.

windows 10 needs to fix the task window size when a task is reopened

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

According to my understanding I suggest you to open Internet Explorer on the Desktop. Drag the window's corners until the window is the exact size you want it. Immediately close the window. Windows memorizes that size and always reopens the window
to that same size. This only applies to the program you are working in, (Internet Explorer) so you have to do it in each program.

Unable to close Calculator app on Windows 10.

To assist you better, I would like to ask if the issue persists with other Windows Apps as well.

I suggest you to press/hold the left click button on the title bar of the calculator and drag the Windows to shrink the size of the Windows and check if the close (X) option appears. If the issue still persists, then suggest you to run the Windows Store
Apps troubleshooter by following the steps provided below:

• Type “Troubleshooting” in search box and press Enter.
• Click on View all on top left pane.
• Select “Windows Store Apps” from the list and follow the prompts for troubleshooting.

Why don't folders reopen in the same size and position as they were when last closed?

Thank you for the suggestion. I have tried it and the window remains the same size when reopened as it was when last closed, but not in the same position. I have one particular window that covers about half of the screen and I always use it in the bottom
half of the screen with another window using the top half. I want the bottom half window to reopen in the bottom half every time, but it always opens in the top half of the screen covering the top half window and I have to drag it to the bottom every time.
So annoying when Windows XP and 7 handled this with no problem at all.
