Wonder why some people have problems with this...? I have them on (default) - disk usage 0. Suggests some underlying trigger...

Sorry to say I have NOT resolved this!

Months ago I was able to stop it using the suggestion to turn off Windows notification (which is posted above on this forum and elsewhere) but after Win 10 updated some months back it started up again. I have followed so many suggestions and links without resolution I finally stepped back and took a break from troubleshooting efforts.

The UPDATE is that sometimes it takes an estimated 15 mins. of idle time before the disk is flickering solid; other times it is more like 20-30 mins. before it starts up. As said prior, just touching the mousepad or keyboard makes it stop and not start again as long as I am using the laptop.

When I have been able to look at Task Manager's Processes tab the "System and Compressed Memory" is usually at top of list, I have changed Page File size along with stopping suggested Services and on and on...and here I sit without resolution. CPU usage can bounce up/down or sometimes peg at 100%. Disk usage fluctuates as well.

Of course Win 10 does self maintenance, disk indexing and other background functions that need time to complete. However, my take is this is none of that as the symptom will happen every day, all day if left On and idle and the case gets pretty warm as is output from the cooling fan,

So I am now closing the lid and putting the laptop to sleep as soon as I am done processing email, surfing, etc. In other words I am living with it and adapting without resolution. Lucky for me, waking the old Sony VAIO is quick and network connection is almost immediate.

Sooo,,,,if you or anyone else has suggestions or links I am open to hear from you. I am seriously considering doing a clean install of Win 7 Pro as it was prior to Win 10 'upgrade' but now just yet... Thanks for asking.

Thank you for your kind response. I have spent countless hours trying to figure it out and have
surrendered as well. I actually did a clean sweep and the problem returned. Windows? One of my "essential" programs? I quit.

Please see the various threads on this forum on "System and Compressed Memory" - simply search for that using the white search box above.

There's also a chance the imminent anniversary edition upgrade may improve things.. I've noted one other long standing issue resolved.

There's no single solution, and it can be hard to identify. Some have experienced this in conjunction with using the Chrome browser, for example.

Hello Dalchina - you and I worked on this months ago and I think that is when I turned off Windows notifications and it stopped for a while.

Thanks for your suggestion on Chrome - this was one of the many things I tried - I exited the Chrome agent from systray and still had the problem. I even uninstalled Chrome and it still happened so I installed a fresh version of Chrome and keep it updated.

I also updated as many driver updates as I could find at Sony support as well. This is an older VAIO so not many new driver updates available for Win 10 specifically.

The fact the 'problem' is well behaved is of note. It only starts when the laptop is idle for some period and stops when touching keyboard or mouse pad so it is 'behaving normally' for Windows which makes it harder to troubleshoot.

JDF135 and others - this site has several posts offering different solutions. Some or one of these may work for you or others. I am going to disable 'Crashplan' per one post - this is one I have not tried. So weird that different solutions work for different people - including me (re: turning off Windows notifications months ago). Copy and paste the link below and read the posts for possible solutions.

*Biggrin Yes, it appears that the Win 10 Anniversary Update (AU) resolved the pain in the butt problem many of us have had for months!

I did the update today and so far the symptoms of high CPU and/or high disk usage has not occurred once.

I let it sit idle for over an hour and other than normal blips on the hard drive there was nothing irregular happening.

TIP: to get that AU update go to Settings>Updates> Learn More - this will open your browser on a Microsoft page where you can click to Get Anniversary Update started!!

Another tip - Don't Minimize the update page after it starts. I did that on one PC and it never completed. I had to reboot and start over - thankfully it picked up where it had left off (no error message by the way) and completed without a problem. So on other PC and laptop I did not minimize that page and both completed without incident.

So glad to see the disk light dark except for the rhythmic blip that is normal. Go for it - good days ahead!

  11. We did the following:
    1. Run intensive diagnostic for the disk on BIOS > Result: all pass meaning nothing wrong the physical disk
    2. We did turn off the Windows notification > Still has 100% spike on the disk

Eventually, we end up update all firmware updates on all components (BIOS, network, disk etc etc) and end up the Disk Utilisation went to around 5% *Smile. In our case, before the Windows 10 upgrade, there is no firmware updates. BUT now we found that there is a firmware updates for this.

    Hope this helps

    Hello windows user,
Perhaps you don't know yet, as i read in this forum, high disk usage is caused by cache working. Here is picture of it.

    Starting condition:

Windows 10 100% Disk Usage every 5 Seconds [IMG]

    Final condition:

Windows 10 100% Disk Usage every 5 Seconds [IMG]

Time taken for cache working is about one minute. So i should wait it to finish.

That is the cause of the problem.
The solution of the problem is not known yet, to me.
I did all update, at last update there is a small "can not complete update", the problem (cache working) is still exist.

I think win10 have problem too with update policy.
It can not tell which update have error. It tells KBxxx have error, but the file of offline (download-able) is 2 files, one have size 500 MB, another is 1 GB. It's not good if I should download that big file, that takes a lot of resource, because I believe I have problem on small part of that big file. And I don't know which one of files is the right one for me.
