My computer is a Dell XPS 9700 with 2 1TB SSDs installed. I've been copying video files from a "media server" Fetch STB successfully, but slowly, using both Windows 10 Pro 22H2 and recently Windows 11 Pro 22H2 using the following method:Open 2 separate folders; the destination "D:\Media_Server" and the source "This PC\STB 192.168.1.3\Recordings\Air Crash Investigation".Drag the target file from the source to the destination. A copy progress window opens and progresses normally. With 5 seconds left, copying stops and will never complete. I've had just one case where it slowed down and froze in

  2. Windows 10 File History Makes Copies of Copies on Local Drive

My client has a Windows 10 Pro installation, that makes copies of copies of copies of the File History to the local "C" drive whenever File History is turned on. At no time has a file restore operation been attempted.

The machine is joined to a Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 domain, and the copies occur whether the Domain switch for "Managed" File History is enabled or not.

We have performed the following after experiencing multiple copies while domain managed:

    1) Turned off the switch for "Managed File History" in the WSE dashboard.

    2) Deleted all user File History content on the server

    3) Renamed the C:\Users\"User"\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Config files

    4) Installed a new local USB 2TB drive and added the drive

    5) Added one folder to the "Library"

    6) Ran SFC /scannow with no abnormalities reported

Once the above actions were completed, the file history seemed to populate normally, until it completed, then the copies to the local drive started all over again quickly filling the drive.

The result is as follows. Any suggestions?

  3. Media/File Server on the cheap

    Hey guys,

My PC is currently filling up and i have 4 HDDs.

I use my PC as a media server as well as a gaming rig.

What I want/need to do is build an external enclosure/rig that is cheap money wise and effective as a file/media server that is DNLA compliant. It would be nice to be able to run my Usenet through it and control it via web interface and remote connect. I would use Linux if a step by step guide is available for setting up the DNLA server and such as well.

This is my first foray into this field of PCs. Help please! ^_^

Windows Search is Disabled. Windows Media Server Won't Start as it says it needs Search! Issue is SSD drive as boot and how to override Media Server or Search . . ..

    Hello,

I asked a similar question in the Network & Internet Group and didn't get any useful replies. I'm hoping by rewording it and asking it in a different area, I'll have more success.

I am wanting to use the Windows Media Server, but can't get it to start. Specifically it fails with the error:

Windows could not start the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service service on the Local Computer.

Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

When I look at the dependency services, I find:

    • HTTP Service
    • Windows Search
When I check I find the HTTP Service is OK.
The Windows Search is NOT OK, as on my system its mode is DISABLED!

After a bit a searching, I found the issue with starting Windows Search is my boot drive being a SSD. It looks like Windows disables as part of its SSD support Windows Search. Thus it is also disabling Windows Media Server, which is UNACCEPTABLE! I need
both SSD and Windows Media Server.

How do I get Windows Media Server running without Windows Search OR get Windows Search running and ignore the SSD (e.g. don't index or use the drive)?????????????????

Note: I already tried the following directions and it didn't help enable Windows Search, etc. PLEASE NOTE: RPC works fine, but I did these
instructions anyway and again they didn't help.

Make sure Remote Procedure call service is running by following the below steps:

    • Open Run, and type in services.msc then press Enter.
    • Stop the Remote Procedure call service and start it again.
    • Restart the system.
    • Again start Windows search service and check.
When I do the above, the Windows Search Sevice still shows DISABLED (as I still have a SSD) and Media Server still fails to start with the above error message.
