Windows 10 1511 Network Browsing Issue

I have a Synology server. In the server Control Panel under File Services/Advanced Setting/Max Protocol for Windows File Service/Dropdown box SMB1,2, or 3. It defaulted to SMB2. I chose SMB1 and the Network reappeared in the Win 10 desk top. Hope this helps you.

OK, thanks. Now I have seen that when I disable SMB2 on my server, the network neighborhood on my Windows 10 system reappears. So it seems that SMB2 on Windows 10 1511 is broken.

    Regards,

    Bart

I enabled SMB3 instead of SMB1 on my server and that seems to be ok too with network show on Win10.

Maybe you have to change the setting on the NAS to improve compatibility and let Windows default.

SMB3 was a choice in Synology server on the dropdown. I think you're right on Win 10 you can only enable/disable 2.

Windows 10 1511 Network Browsing Issue

I have not even what versions of the SMB protocol are supported by Windows 10 v1511.

In the Windows network window, how do I display all computers in a network regardless of their version of the SMB protocol used?

In Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 10 v1511, how do I find out which version of SMB in use?

    Thanks

    Bye

You can't fix this thing yourself. MS messed it up so MS has to fix it.

There is a dichotomy on my comps. Some can see the NAS and its shares but error with the other comp shares, and others can see the other comp shares but not see the NAS at all.

I can't fiddle with my NAS SMB settings, either, as the Mybooklive doesn't have that ability.

A good compromise is to have your other networked comp shares being accessible and the NAS added to File Explorer Quick Access.

Then wait till MS get around to fixing the mess.

    Hi all,

After spending two whole days of searching on the Internet and trying out the various suggestions, what finally did the trick (for me at least) was to verify with the command "nbtstat -a [computer-name]" what are the workgroup names for all members of my workgroup network: two desktops running Windows 10 home (same edition, updated a few weeks ago), one Dlink NAS (DNS-320 ShareCenter) and an Orange Livebox router.

All came up with the workgroup name I defined on the PC's and the NAS, but NOT the router, this one sticked to the name: "workgroup", probably because I didn't find out how to change the name. I then changed the workgroup name on the PC's and the NAS to the same name as the router ("workgroup"). I then switched everything off.

Starting up, beginning with the router, then the NAS and finally the two desktops. And, lo and behold: everyone sees everyone, with only the router as masterbrowser and the now common name "workgroup". I will check over the next few days to see if this stays stable. Curious to hear from you guys whether this works for you too.

Interesting. Do you have any idea what SMB version your router is running? I would guess V1, and that would match the results that were reported earlier in this thread.

Unfortunately, I cannot confirm your setup, because I have a Windows only network. Like I reported before, when I disable V2 and V3 on my Windows 2012 R2 server, the problem also was gone. Of course, this does NOT imply that Windows 2012 R2 is the cause of this problem!

    Bart

    Hello Bart,

I'm not sure about SMB, I tried to interrogate my Livebox router, but I didn't find anything about SMB. In fact the router is a combined router/internet interface (from Orange France), using the DHCP server protocol to assign the various IP addresses through Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/Ipv4). In the router interface setup page I specified the computer names in association with the addresses. Every member is linked by ethernet.

Then, remembering something I did when the network was still using Windows XP, I thought about the Master Browser issue and the need to first start the device to become Master Browser and then the rest. Since the router is almost always switched on, shutting down/starting the other members of the network would not change the Master Browser. Anyway, I lack the detailed knowledge about network parameters, other than setting up the network adapter settings (almost all default settings), so I am quite happy with the fact that it seems to work and that I can now see all members of the network (workgroup) from every other member. I will probably soon buy a small simple laptop running Windows 10, so that would give me even more possibilities to check.

    Best regards,

    Wim

What I understand from the information on Internet about the Orange Livebox, is that it is NOT a fileserver for Windows networks, and it does NOT speak any SMB protocol. So I do not think that it can act as a Windows browser, let alone Master browser. Please correct me if I am wrong!

But if I am right, Your situation is entirely different from what I have, and I don't feel confident to say anything useful here.

    Regards,

    Bart
