Windows 10 1709 constantly waking HDD after 10 minutes

    Bonjour,
I'm having an issue since Windows 1709 with sleeping HDD.

I have, in my home computer, 5 HDD wich one is an SSD for the OS.

I have setup my drives to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity, the problem is, after 10 minutes or so, Windows keeps waking them up even though I'm not using them. Some of them are old and noisy so I want them to stay offline until I need them. It's only logical, you don't want them running for no reason. Have any of you encountered that problem lately and is there any fix?

    Thanks

    :)

Win10 1709 keeps waking up hard disk all the time

Before the 1709 update my system was nice, smooth and quiet (2 SSD + 1 HDD, mostly idle)

After the 1709 update system started waking up HDD randomly (like every hour or something), spinning the mechanical disk for long time, creating unnecessary noise, not to mention lowering disk lifespan.

I tried to turn off every new "feature" (a.k.a bloatware) from the new update, but the issue is still here.

I've found some discussions on the internet, more people have the same problem, no solution yet though (besides physical power switch for disks).

    Any ideas?

  3. After upgrade to Fall Creators Update computer wakes up at 4am every day from hibernate.

    Hi

After I updated to Fall Creators Update (version 1709) my computer wakes up at around 4am every day from hibernate. I did following:

    * Checked that maintenance disabled (and anyway time for maintenance is 11am).

    * Checked that Allow wake times is disabled.

    * Checked that allow hybrid sleep disabled.

    * Checked tasks that can wake up PC and there is none.

    * Checked that there is no device that allowed to wake up computer.

Also I did run these commands:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>powercfg -lastwake

    Wake History Count - 1

    Wake History [0]

    Wake Source Count - 0

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>powercfg -waketimers

There are no active wake timers in the system.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>powercfg -devicequery wake_armed

    NONE

When I do hibernate I can see this in System's event log:

10/22/2017 10:02:52 PM (time when I did hibernate)

    The system is entering sleep.

    Sleep Reason: Application API

    ---

    10/22/2017 10:02:55 PM

The system has resumed from sleep.

but I after I did hibernate I stayed with computer for 5 minutes and computer was off. No lights, it looks completely powered off.

And I didn't do anything on computer just upgraded Windows to version 1709

Are you sure you're referring to the HDD going into sleep mode rather than the screen going into screen saver mode? I ask this because your post reminded me of what my computer has done ever since I got a wireless mouse. After a minute of inactivity (that's what I have it set for), the screen goes dark. Then after about 5 or 10 minutes, the screen comes back on again, even though I don't even touch anything to make it come on. I discovered that if I turn the switch on the bottom of the mouse to "off", then the screen stays off until I turn the mouse back on or push a keyboard button.

But if you're actually referring to the Sleep mode, you can disregard what I said.

Well a lot of noise from a very old drive is a very bad sign. You're probably just a short time before one or more dies.

Why not get a couple of new larger drives, copy over the data and ditch those time bombs?
