Windows 10: Windows 10 1803 Update Error 0xc1900101 - possible error and resolution

Just a FYI around this error - what it was due to on my PC and how I fixed it.


WARNING! This involves some sound judgements when it comes to deleting entires in the registry so if you feel awkward about this, I recommend getting in touch with Microsoft support for assistance for that part.


As mentioned in several threads the most likely cause is a driver incompatibility. This was the case for me as well, but not a hardware driver, rather it was the drivers installed by the AVG antivirus software. These drivers should have been removed when I uninstalled AVG some years back, but was not (and yes - I have run the AVG_remover software repeatedly but without effect).

You can find find if this is the origin of your problems via running a kernel dump analysis, but that is a bit tricky, so instead: if you know you have had AVG installed, have a look in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers folder. If you see old files starting with avg like this:



...then you most likely have the same problem as I did. No guarantee, but if it helps someone then good.


To solve this you need to do four things:

1. Make sure you have a backup in case you happen to make a mistake.
2. Boot windows into safe mode (described here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode)
3. Once in safe mode go to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers folder and move the avgXXX.sys files to another folder (or delete them).
4. Open regedit and search for AVG and remove ALL RELEVANT ENTRIES (AND ONLY THOSE!!). This is the critical one - which are the relevant entries? Well, I can´t say for sure... I removed everything that I could judge had anything to do with AVG Antivirus - basically anything that mentioned a path like C:\...\AVG\..., or had a value that contained AVG srl (the company name) as well as all the entries for the drivers shown in the picture above, but its very likely that its enough to just remove the driver entries. This is how the corresponding driver entries looks in the registry:

So either you just remove those and boot windows back into normal mode (described on the same page that showed how to boot into safe mode - see the link above) and retry the update or you delete (using your sound judgement) everything that clearly has somehing to do with AVG (and there are alot of them - the registry is littered with AVG stuff).


After performing those steps Windows had no problems updating itself to 1903.

Unable to update Windows 10 Pro version 1709 to 1803

Have made several attempts to update Windows 10 version 1709 to the latest version 1803 and have not been successful.

I've done the following per some suggestions found online:

• Updated drivers
• Ran the Trouble Shooter for Windows 10 (Errors found were shown to be "Fixed" per the tool)
• Unplugged the printer

Although not at every attempt, I have received the following errors:

• 0xc1900101
• 0x80070643

Can someone please advise me as to what the errors are and provide me with the steps to update Windows.

Hello, I am trying to update from Windows 8 to Windows 10 directly from notifications but I am getting this error after the setup is completed. I am getting this error after: C1900101-30018 Error
