Windows 10: Windows 10 1903 BSOD

I've been running build1803 on my my Dell Latitude E6520 with no problems - but I hadn't even realized it had been failing previous automatic upgrades until the other day when it prompted me to install build 1903.


Unfortunately, after looking as though it almost finished upgrading successfully, it rebooted with a BSOD in the "SECOND_BOOT" phase with the code 0xC1900101 - 0x40017. I can see many other people have had this same issue.

I've tried again this several times in several ways, including from the media creation tool, and also tried all the standard tricks (i.e. large fixed virtual memory) I see on various help forums. I took the laptop off the docking station and did the upgrade completely "bare" with nothing extra attached. Nothing in the USB ports.

The good news is that after the BSOD (which actually happens twice) it reverts back to 1803 and everything seems ok. But - after the revert there are no minidump files (the revert erases them?) so I have no way of knowing which driver or drivers may have caused the BSOD. I could maybe try and stop after the first BSOD, do a diagnostic startup, save the minidump file (if there's one still there) and try disabling various drivers - but I'm scared that even that might not work and/or it won't revert after that and I'll be stuck dead!


Any ideas how I can (safely) figure out what's wrong?

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
