Windows 10: Windows 10 2018 update failed badly

I've a AMD laptop with Windows 10 which recently got one of the major 2018 updates. However it failed on the missing Windows\config\systemprofile\Desktop folder. Even after adding it and setting security for all nothing happens. Rebooting the computer and logging in shows the update screens (protection against online world, Leave it to us etc) but then ends in an empty desktop and nothing works. The Windows button does nothing nor starting programs. Only task manager can be run and from its File/Start task some programs seem to start if run as admin. Running Explorer returns an error on a missing/unknown token.

Running ms-settings from CMD also returns an error that the command is not recognized.


There's the following folders:

c:\Windows

c:\Windows.old

c:\WindowsUpd (or something alike)


What can I do before Windows deletes c:\Windows.old?


Despite the fact that I'm an ICT professional, this one gets me nearly panicking.

Windows 10 fails to update


When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

Then if the issue persists, please return to the trouble shooting list in post# 89

I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.

 

Windows Updates failed to instal

I just did step one and they have just all installed.... thank you so much.... it was quite frustrating having that update window pop up every 5 minutes and failing to instal every time
