Windows 10 Action Center Stuck in Quiet Hours

I'm running Windows 10 Pro (Version 10.0.10586 according to the `ver` command).

When I first installed Windows 10 a few weeks ago, the Action Center behaved in a way I would have considered normal. At some point in the evening, it would go into "quiet hours" and I looked up the icon change to figure out what that was.

Then occasionally it started randomly going into quiet hours even though it said quiet hours were off. I would turn quiet hours on then off again, and that would turn quiet hours off.

But lately for the last few days, the AC goes into quiet hours fairly regularly and there's no way to turn off the quiet hours. It claims they are off. If I turn them on and off again, it stays in quiet hours. Occasionally (and rarely) it comes out of quiet hours, but then goes back in again.

Are quiet hours even configurable? What determines when they're supposed to turn on? And how do I fix this erratic behavior?

    :)

  2. Action Center Icon Shows Quiet Hours Turned On

Many times after starting or restarting my PC with Windows 10, the Action Center icon on the task bar shows the notification symbol with a circle in the bottom right corner meaning Quiet Hours have been turned on. I didn't turn on quiet hours and the Quiet
Hours Quick Action Box box in the Action Center window is grey. So, why does the Action Center icon in the task bar show that Quiet Hours are on? If they are on, how did they get turned on?

  3. Action center won't open

Nothing happens when I click on the systray icon. Right clicking on the icon gives me 2 choices: 'Open Action Center', and 'Turn On Quiet Hours'. Choosing 'Open Action Center' does nothing. Choosing 'Turn On Quiet
Hours' changes to 'Turn Off Quiet Hours' when right-clicking on it again. I've tried running the SFC which tells me all is okay. I ran DISM.exe with same result. I've also run the chkdsk /f as well where no changes were required. Is there some way to reset
the action center without having to completely reinslall Windows 10?

Windows 10 Action Center Stuck in Quiet Hours

Hi, I find this interesting (in a warped, twisted sort of way *Wink)
Set Quiet Hours in Windows 10 - Windows Help -

Set Quiet Hours in Windows 10

    Applies to Windows 10
Quiet Hours are times of day when you don't want to be disturbed by notifications. How to set them up:

    • 1. Click the Action Center icon on the taskbar.
    • 2. Click Quiet hours.
      3. Set your Quiet Hours.
The last (3) seems to suggest there is a setting - but as you - and others- have observed it seems to be just an on/off button now.

    E.g.
Windows 10: No scheduled Quiet Hours? - Windows Central Forums
I've not seen Quiet hours on, so can't comment on your other query, sorry.

Yes, I've been in the settings. The point of my post is that the system has taken on a mind of its own and it began randomly deciding when to turn on quiet hours. Now, they're on most of the time. Off times are not per any predictable pattern that I've observed. And when I right click the icon and turn them off, they stay on.

This was how MS did it.. in an earlier build it seems.
Set Quiet Hours for Notifications in Windows 10
    - how to set the schedule.. hmm, not obvious to find at first.
Except that seems to have been withdrawn..

Does this still happen if you do a clean boot?
    In safe mode?
    I.e. is anything interfering.

If no one is offering a suggestion, and there's nothing obvious as a search result, it suggests you may need to experiment... I've never noted mine turn on... or seen comment about it I'm afraid.

This is the relevant registry key:
    HKU\S-1-5-21-xxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxx-1001\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Notifications\Settings\NOC_GLOBAL_SETTING_TOASTS_ENAB LED: 0x00000000
Note it is created to disable notifications, and does not exist otherwise.

You may feel less lonely if you read this:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...d233bb8?page=3
    and note Andrea Solari's post.

Now that I've identified the registry entry, it should be possible to identify what creates it, assuming that's what happens, using Sysinternals Process Monitor.

Windows 10 settings have changed a lot since the information in that link was compiled, evidently. There's no quiet hours schedule to be found in the settings currently.

Interesting, the quiet hours are behaving at the moment. They hadn't for several days. There was also a notification that system updates have occurred, so maybe something got fixed? I can hope...

Although when I click on the System Updates Installed notification I was hoping to see what the updates were. Instead, it tried to run a previous Windows 7 Lenovo-specific system app that failed (I upgraded a Lenovo laptop from Windows 7). Oy.

Anyway, thanks for all the great info and the links. I appreciate it.

Cool. That establishes that the official documentation matches the observation of what's settable.

However, as I originally posted, the behavior is still wonky. I reckon it looks like I have to live with the on/off setting having a mind of its own. Oddly, for a couple of days this past week, it was letting me change it (on/off) and I thought it might have been fixed in an update. But as of yesterday, it's back to random or mostly "on" and won't let me turn it "off". Just another Win 10 quirk on my system.

  10. Not a solution, but if it's any consolation I see it randomnly popping up too. At first I didn't know that icon related to it. Most of the time it's not there but occasionally it occurs. I have never turned it on myself.

I've just added OPTION THREE to the tutorial to be able to turn on/off Quiet Hours using a BAT file that you might see may help.

*Smile Brink- you spotted the registry key I mentioned.. Clicking the 'Quiet hours' tile does no more and no less than the bat files. So, if some users see it switching on and off erratically, there is a root cause, and executing the bat file will not prevent that.
